I've just spent a long time trying to make a 4 * 20 LCD display work driven from an Arduino. The code was cribbed from the interweb, the wiring checked endlessly, no go. Rang my compuetr guru Paul, still no go. Then I turned up the contrast. Now it works. Hint if your lcd display doesn't work try giving it some welly. You'd think they would ship them on max contrast, then at least you'd know it's working.

I bought a couple of these cheapo displays for a BBC Microbit, Like Duncan, cribbed the code from the web and was disappointed that the display did not light up. After a bit of head scratching, I tried the second display and Hey presto, it worked fine. Result – 1 display was DOA.

LCD displays have a contrast pin that needs feeding from the centre of a potentiometer with the outer contacts going to vcc and ground, adjust the pot for best readability, hey you on done.

While some LCD displays may work without the pot, most will not.

Over Christmas we built the "Arduino Rotary Table for Dummies" from HMEM **LINK**. The instructions cover adjusting the contrast and checking the backlight is on before even installing the driver – sounds like the voice of experience

I bought my first Arduino & LCD display last year “to play with”. I also battled to get the display to do anything. Had I killed it? The only reference to screen brightness in the destructions was to change the voltage on one of the input pins. Being a bit shy to try that, I eventually thought that I would try adjusting the pot, on the basis that if I had killed it, a bit of fiddling wouldn’t hurt: it immediately worked. It was somewhat annoying that I had spent several hours trying to troubleshoot the blank display, all because the manufacturer had not said that screen brightness is controlled by the pot… Humpf!
