There are probably a number of you who know & love out of copyright books reprinted by Lindsay Publications. Well, many of Lindsay's books were reprints of Industrial Press books (Machinery's etc). Many of them are available for free from a US based Internet Archive. Most of the books are in multiple formats, but few of the formats are suitable for images, so the PDF version of the book is what you need to download.

But you can also do a search based on Author (eg H Greenly or P N Hasluck) or subject.

Anyway, I think I need to warn you in advance: If you are a bibliophile, you will spend HOURS searching & downloading. There are also books on needlework, knitting, carpentry, architecture, automobiles, steam engines, toy making etc etc . Fun for the whole family!

I bought a 'Deep Hole Drilling book from Camden recently, and it's in that list, but must admit I prefer the paper copy and have no qualms about shelling out good cash for it.

I am ashamed to admit that I have now downloaded 2.5Gb of books from that site (about 200 books) and have read maybe 1 in 10… I will get around to reading the rest. Honest, guv.

Unfortunately many of the PDF's don't work on the Kindle 4 as they display text free and only show a strange shadow of the text on the background page image, while the 'Kindle' file download is graphics free. Means reading them on a PC/Tablet screen, which is never very good, and I don't think it's worth printing out 10000 pages or so.

Is it just me – but I don't find e-books at all satisfactory? There is something about holding a book and turning the pages and flipping back and forth which is pleasing.

Thinking that the solution was a Kindle I bought one some years ago and downloaded books with enthusiasm. My favourite series' I have now re-purchased as paperbacks, re-read and enjoyed all the more in paper form. Anyone else share my thoughts?

Indeed. Plus my wife complains if I try and read the computer in bed and I haven't got a waterproof one to use in the bath.

Definitely grounds for the installation of a large screen monitor and internet connection in the bathroom. Perhaps a monitor on the ceiling over the bed as well.

I spend every Thursday afternoon in John Rylands Library [on Deansgate, Manchester] reading 'proper' books [mostly 16th-18th century] … But I still appreciate the wonderful gift that we have from the likes of Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive.
