Let me think… theres Nick G for his wicked humour, Neil Wyatt for restoring order, JS for p*****g off people, Jason B for his tech.contributions, and a lot more others for their specialization on various subjects…inc.bee keeping, sheep and goat and other stuff…all in the queue before mesmiley

In addition to the wonderful depth of knowledge shared by those already mentioned (including those mentioned by themself!) I am constantly amazed at the breadth of knowledge shared on this site. Someone only has to post a very specific question regarding an obscure shaping machine or bench vice or vintage car speedometer made for four years between the wars and within minutes someone with a history of five previous posts will pop up with "I've got one of them, do this, this and this and here's a picture of what you need and PM me for a copy of the manufacturer's workshop manual". It happens all the time and never ceases to amaze me. Well done all! (And especially Neil and the mods who keep a lid on the whole thing and make it all possible.)

I hope Michael will return when he feels comfortable to, he will certainly be welcome back. Sometimes a break can do us all good, and I'd rather anyone getting wound up by anything about the forum took a 'pause for reflection' rather than disappearing over the horizon.

Someone commented about a 'like' button, hopefully any future version of the forum will have one, I used to think it was a trendy social media idea, but it's a good way to show appreciation when you don't want to clog up a thread with 'empty' comments. I see a lot of informative, educatinal and entertaining (Reithian? ) comments that deserve a 'like'.

            Neil.

As long as it doesn't include a dislike or thumbs down icon like youtube – it really gets me down when you watch a really good video that someone has put a lot of time and effort to make and some tool gives it the thumbs down .

Any opportunity you give a troll to sneak in the front gate and they will roll in by the busload !

            Ian.

I would add Les Jones to the list for his knowledge on electric motors. His patience in answering questions ( often the same one) with little information from the poster .

I think his 2nd and more recent 'I am not going to post anymore' is due to a PM exchange we had between us.

I had asked via a forum post for specific information and support on a subject and immediately received from him a string of unsolicited links in response, which, while generic on the subject, were going to be first stops for anyone with any meagre ability with a search engine.

Subsequently via a PM I commented to him that I thought that his local search engine service could put some people off and perhaps 'less might be more' and certainly less likely to undermine his standing and his in depth personal knowledge and experience.

If I am the cause then clearly I must have touched the same nerve as others had earlier in the year.

Once you took it from the forum to a PM you made it personal , keep it on the forum so the moderators can keep a check on it .

I think this sort of thing has happened before to MG

I personally will miss his input to the forum and it is a loss to all forum users especially any newcomers .

                Ian.

I post very little on this site butte wisdom I have gained is just staggering although in my mind I will probably always remain a beginner. I find it very sad when a fellow 'colleague' stops posting for whatever reason. Michael G if you are still following please reconsider your decision.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all contributors for their willingness in share their knowledge and experience.

In this age of the "consultant" and the staggering remunerations one reads about, I wonder what the value of the advice given out daily on this site would amount to if given by some of those mercenaries?

If I may, I would also like to add my appreciation of Michael G's extremely broad based and detailed recall that he has shared so freely with us all over many years.

I have personally benefitted more than once from his extraordinary breadth of knowledge on diverse engineering related topics. This appreciation also extends to many others who have shared specialised experience with me that I don't have, thank you all.

As I have also been 'mentioned in despatches' I have only done what anyone else would do where it has been possible to help someone else not equipped to do it for themselves; it is though gratifying to be appreciated for what to me seems only to be returning the favours shown to me here on this forum and at other times elsewhere in my life.

                      My regards to all
                      Brian

I have had "bumpf" I had posted on the Internet used as promotional material for sales of specific electronic model engineering products, (not by an advertiser here) and have had other "open source" code taken (bugs included) by companies without any thanks or acknowledgment. (the bugs give it away; always look for the edge cases and issues there, btw)

Even if they said "thanks", but, nope!

Serves me right for putting it on-line "for the good of others"!

Like many others, I would mourn the loss of Michael's input on a wide range of topics.

He typifies the immense range of knowledge available here from the contributors, who are all freely volunteering their skills and experience, and we shall be the poorer for his departure.

So I hope that he will reconsider.

How much time did Michael G spend in giving information on finding links ? it must amount to 100,s of man hours, much of which has been interesting, useful and for many, including myself encouraging!

Come back Michael…. don't give up….you have many friends in this forum.

I too was surprised by MGs announcement and hope he will reconsider, he will be missed here. I doubt Alan Wood is in any way responsible for his departure.

It must be at least a couple of years ago now but I managed to upset Michael once. I had posted a response to a technical question from a forum member and because I only had limited knowledge of the subject my answer was probably only of limited value, I concluded my posting by saying something like 'but I'm sure Michael will come along with a better solution'.

Michael took umbrage with me, I think because I had given the impression that he was the 'official answer supplier'. It was quickly sorted without any PMs and we have had no differences since (well other than technical ones).

I for one hope that this site never closes down,if it does,I might as well put up the shutters since I would be back in High Babes again. The amount of knowledge available, and for free !! is just ——————–! Even after a lifetime working in industry,I am still learning, like many others,I suspect.

Long may it last even though I may have little to contribute.

Just reading some of the comments there about the slagging of some of the people who contribute to the forum,is it any wonder that they decide to give it a miss ? I can give it and take it,but there comes a point where you ask yourself "with friends like this, who needs enemy,s? People do their best, none of us can do any better [despite what we like to think ] so, I say,OK, you dont agree with them, but dont insult them, they might still know a lot more than you do. Well, in light of what you say, I hope nothing bad has become if him……

There are times I've felt the need for 'safe refuge' away from the less than kind spirited responses….

I feel must say something in Michael Gilligans defence. It's numb-scules like me who could learn from him, he gave a lot of time to this forum. I for one will miss him. I think courtesy is what he deserves. Michael please think again for the likes of me and many others.

If you were having a conversation face to face with a forum member, would you say to his face the same as you post on here? Common courtesy costs nothing?
