Hi. I'm new here and need a little help. I've searched the forums for similar threads, but none really answer my question. I need to silver solder some 19mm AF mild steel hex bar to some 10mm mild steel plate. Can anyone recommend a torch/burner combo please? Also, what kind of heat output in kW will i likely need? Don't mind paying for quality kit. Many thanks.

How big is the sheet of plate as that will be what will take the energy to heat particularly if joint is away from an edge, and length of bar may also come into it.

David, I think you might need oxy propane set up for that job, it's going to take quite a bit of heat to get it hot enough to silver solder. I think, if it is to be attached to the end of the hex bar I would drill the plate, poke the bar through, then weld it.

                Plate is about 60mm x 50mm.

This is 10mm thick x 80dia done with HT5 flux and the standard Sievert burner, kit like this should do you. Take a couple of mins to get upto temp so get the next size up burner if you are in a hurry.

I have a Sievert torch with a selection of different sized nozzles and so far it covers my needs and by what you describe it wont be a problem.

Thanks for the advice. Your work looks similar in nature to my own. I'm in the process of constructing a compact power hacksaw to Myfordboys plans. It's very similar to the old Kennedy machine in principal, using the hex bar for the slideways.

I bought the complete SIEVERT set from HAMILTON GAS PRODUCTS in Bangor on 028 9146 1111.

Recommended and they will put a kit of just what you need for a particular job and advise on best burner .

I will second Hamilton Gas Products. Great service and good prices on Sievert products. Postage costs were very reasonable as well the last time I ordered from them.
