      Morning one and all!

I am just wondering if anybody has used or recommends any Android based CAD software for on the road designing….

Qcad is a 2d package that will run on linux. I think Autocad offered an editor that runs on Android for site meetings and so on. You could also try these:

Onshape is available as a phone app.

Never tried it. Though they have decent poke these days, I'm not sure Android hardware is man enough to run a full-blown 3D-CAD package – expect sluggish. Some of the Android products are readers rather than editors, which is practical.

To me though the biggest objection is the environment and tiny screen. I struggle to think CAD unless there's peace and quiet, couldn't do it on a crowded train. But the really big problem is screen size. CAD is much easier with a giant screen, ideally two big screens. Or even three. Also with table space for a hefty mouse, and – for serious CAD – a 3D-mouse as well. Plus a full-sized keypad, a notebook, references, and maybe bits of the real thing to measure.

Although CAD works OK on a laptop, it's downright inferior to running the same software on a fast workstation with two 24" screens. I think an Android would drive me mad, even a 10" tablet.

Please try it and report back. My objection to small screens is partly because my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be.

              sad

                Hi Dave,

I completely understand your points. I wasn't looking for the full experience on Android, nor would I expect it. I do have a fairly large tablet with a pen so in terms of usability, I'm not as restricted.

Its mainly for having a poke about and a play while I am in transit or nowhere near my beloved desktop setup.

F360 has (had?) an app for Android phones. I was able to demonstrate models I'd created on the grown-up version without problems, but I haven't used it for a year or so.

What about CAD for Chrome OS? Might that be more suitable with the heavy lifting being done on the server?

I hope you don't literally mean 'on the road'

I've tried a few on my android tablet. I have to say none have worked very well.

The Autocad demo was the best, but I didn't care to spend money on something I would only use occasionally.

I use Onshape on a desktop, but the android version is very limited – you can view models but its near impossible to actually work on them, and some features aren't yet supported.

I also tried UVCAD and Inard CAD. Neither really worked and the workflow was confusing and cumbersome.
