I’ve become a bit of a fan of Tom Scott’s videos – not all of them are engneering-related, but I thought this one about a very old rockfall detection system on a Scottish railway might be of interest to the forum.

The essence of engineering – solving a difficult problem in the simplest, most efficient, lowest-cost but most reliable way?

The branch line from Weymouth to Portland passed through a deep, vertically-walled cutting near its terminus in the “Tophill” village of Easton. A somewhat similar rockfall warning system was used there, but I am not sure if it was mechanical (putting signals to Danger) or electrical (breaking the circuit so triggering an alarm).

Yes watched that Grindstone Cowboy and really enjoyed it but they are still trying to mend something that aint broke by spending money on electrickery systems that so very often fail.
