I have not had much luck with oil guns in the past, they seem to leak just about anywhere but in the nipple to which they are applied!

Can anyone recommend an oil gun that actually works, I need one for my ML7 lathe.

      Thanks,

      Andrew.

See Barry Forrest's design in MEW July 2011, Issue 178, Page 48 "An Oiler for the Myford Lathe." I made one, and it works very well.

On my ML7 I just place a scrap of paper-towel over the nipple, then use the oilgun as usual …. no problem at all.

Jeez, what is it with oil gun problem posts?

Last year bought 2 replacement no name Chinese oil cans (to replace decade old Euro/US ones), the type sold every where inc MMart, markets, etc, the type with a bendy see thru hose spout and a metal solid type. Both work perfectly. Oil only comes out where it should, ie the end. And the spout tips fit ball oilers perfect. I paid about £2.50 ea for them here in a local hardware shop, i doubt they are more than a fiver in the UK.

I fitted to a cheap oil can a brass end with an internal o ring selected to squeeze over my ML7 oil nipples. It was a quick and dirty prototype to test the concept, but it worked so well it remains in service. Works a treat.

Oil gun or oil can? To me an oil gun is "similar" to a grease gun. But perhaps growing up on a farm (and now owning a cletrac) makes discerning the differences more important.

Confusion reigns. I assume you mean oil gun, something that looks like a grease gun but is filled with oil to use on the Myford oil nipples. The paper towel trick works. Also look for Guy Lautard on the web, he has a good design.

The Reilang oil can seems to be the one most recomended.

                        Hello,

I cannot see why there is any confusion. I said OIL GUN in my post and not oil can! I think that should define what I am looking for!

I have had several over the years and they all leak. NOT I may say, around the nipple but just about anywhere else that they can!

So can anyone tell me a make that is oil tight.? Please don't let the thread drift!! Just a name will do me!

                        Thanks ,

                        Andrew.

Andrew , My vote is for either the Lumatic OLGH/CV , or if funds allow , the Wanner 30960 . Neither will be cheap these days . Assume they available from any good Lubrication Engineers or maybe Cromwell Tools .

                          Trevor .

Oil guns, oil schmuns. Oil cans, oil schmans.

Jesus H. Buddha with Saffron Robes!! I just checked Wanner oil "guns" 'cos i did'nt know what they were, or looked like. £55-75 depending where you buy it from, over £100 for a lever operated one from Cromwells. That's more than twice the price of a Reilang can.

i have a Reilang, along with several other cans, ranging from 150 to 300 to 500cc. They all work on ball oilers…

Have a look at the PRESSOL 12362, 12363 and 12365 ( different capacities ) on Ebay alt Amazon.

They are listed as combined high pressure grease and oil and are around the £20 mark inlc postage from Germany on Ebay. They come with two nozzles, one semi pointed and one convex. Use one on my M300 which i easily modified one of the screw off nozzles to suit. Convex is easily usable with just a little O ring. They are well engineered steel telescopic units and seal well at each end. Great value.

If you are feeling really flush then Myford are plugging the WANNER guns at around £75. Wanner have always made really good grease guns.

I have 2 oil guns, one Myfd & forget the make of the other; they both leak when not being used however they are stored. Neither of them manage to get any oil to the leadscrew bushes even with the lathe running. Car style nipples & a lever gun would be a much better option.

                                    Andrew,

                                    Calm down dear!

I have a cheap oil gun, bought on ebay which doesn't leak and works fine – though it was definitely sold as an "oil gun" – some claim to do both oil and grease and so I avoided them. However, the problem might be that you need to look at your nipples (oooerrr missuss)!

Whilst the original Myford were still in existence I bought a set of replacement nipples from them. The original ones on my S7 (1956 vintage) had a flat top and made it difficult to get a good seal between the gun and nipple. The replacement ones (spherical top) work fine. There was one nipple I couldn't replace (for oiling the clutch) as there was insufficient room to mount the new one. For that one I made a brass adaptor to screw onto the end of the oil gun.

                                    Regards Tom

I recently bought one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pump-Oil-Gun-for-Myford-Lathe-/122263533592?hash=item1c77797818:g:IwAAAOSwZjJU5M4C

I'll make the following observations. Good and not so good.

Firstly it's made of plastic that some might not feel overly comfortable with in a workshop environment. It was reasonably priced and, (a big plus) to date, it hasn't leaked. Although it gets oil into those oil nipples that stand proud without oil going everywhere the nozzle it too large to fit into some of the recessed nipples on my Mk1 S7. I'm presently looking into that problemette.

I too have had the exact same problem with Myford oil guns.

On the Myford forum someone suggested good results using a Tecalemit brass grease gun and an adapter designed by (I believe) Simon Collier, (although the drawing is signed Bill). Just received my gun and next job is to make the new adapter and test.

eBay item number:112251173038 is an example.

Thanks gentleman, a few solid leads there. I will take a careful look at them and invest some hard earned cash! I have had an original Myford oil gun and it is the biggest load of rubbish that ……… ah well. I tried a couple of other makes over the years and they were not much better.

Now I have two Wanner grease guns and they are brilliant and have lasted a good many years without any trouble. If I can find a Wanner oil gun that I can afford, then that is where I will go. If they are too expensive, then I will go with other recommended items.

                                          Thanks very much indeed,

I changed the original nipples on my S7 to grease nipples, 2BA I recall, available cheaply. I use grease guns filled with suitable oil. The grease guns have to be stored and used 'head down' or the oil leaks out, but it does mean you can inject oil at a high pressure into the bearings or slides, as appropriate. To get to the nipple on the backgear eccentric and the rear of the cone pulley I made an adapter shown in the photo: a hollow tube with a nipple on one end and the other end profiled to fit the machine nipple. The grease gun attaches to the nipple and the adapter is pushed hard up to the nipple on the lathe. Other pictures in my album.

The original Myford 'Oil' gun sold many years ago was in fact a grease gun and seems to be universally condemned as useless.

Thank goodness it wasn't supplied with imported machines or we'd never hear the end of it

+1 for anyone condemning the Myford gun as totally leaky.

The Reilang that replaced it rarely leaked on the ML7 or on ball oilers on the lathe that replaced it.

At the time it seemed fairly expensive, but it foes what is required, and works at almost any angle.
