An interesting design of “Square”

I recently found one of these little squares, in rusty condition:

A very clever design … I wonder what became of it. ???

It would make a good constructional project.

Don't know about that exact design but there are several varieties of small square with pivoting arms, both plain an L shape around. All the measurement / marking out tooling companies had their own versions, most more than one. I've (probably) got 3 or 4 lurking in the workshop. All grabbed for peanuts or free in a spirit of "that's gotta be handy". Hafta say I've yet to use one so maybe not so handy. I'm pretty sure one has never been used by its previous owners despite being between the wars vintage.
