An American with some “small” tools in England…

Hello everyone. I semi-recently moved from America to England and have been a professional machinist and hobby machinist for quite some time and thereby, I have been a member of Practical Machinist for a rather long time. Well, in my search to find a new grinder for my work place, I stumbled across this site. I normally aim toward larger, more robust tooling, but have discovered, that the model engineering world has some tooling that would fit perfectly for my intended purpose at work. I hope you all can help me gain insight into the Clarkson Grinders.

Side note, my work place doesn't want a large Cincinnati or Pratt & Whitney tool and die grinder and desires something with a much smaller foot print.

Hi Michael welcome to the forum. I used a Clarkson cutter grinder when at work usually to make one off cutters or to sharpen slitting wheels etc but I found the Alexander Deckel cutter grinder more usefull for special cutters.

I wonder if you could clarify if you are asking this question as a hobby-type machinist, who wants the machine for his own use or as a working professional who wishes to use it in a commercial environment.

Hi Michael, welcome to the forum. I have a clarkson tool and cutter grinder. What do you need to know ? The clarkson is a versatile machine, all the more so if you have the standard fittings and the attachments, drill grinder, radius grinder, air bearing flute grinder. The mark one is a single speed machine with a small footprint, the mark 2 is 2 speed with a larger footprint, the mark 3 is not so common. The attachments fetch good money often more than the basic machine ! It is a good basis for making special holders Etc for the task you have to do. The bedroom workshop is a good site to view to see many clarksons and all of their attachments. Good Luck Noel.

Have you ever tried to contact the owner with any success?

I've tried, both for download permission, and also to offer some more documentation scans, but I've never had a reply, or even a read or delivery receipt.

No. I only read your other post from a year ago in a different thread after posting in this one. You request a reading and delivery receipt. Fulfilling those requests is optional.

His site was last updated February this year. As you said, it is not difficult to find his domain registration service provider's contact form and use that if necessary. There is also another Steve, of 'Steve's Workshop', who features the first Steve's model engine on his site, so an email to him might produce results.

Thank you all for the welcomes. To answer a few questions:

1. Yes, I did buy it for my own use, but I also only bought it to convince my works to buy something similar and as small to fix this repeated expenditure we have. There's a long story here, but I digress.

2. I tried to contact the owner of bedroom workshop and still have had no luck. I really would like to try and get the manual for it. I already found the grinding book they published, but I have always liked to have information on machines I run.

3. The attachments are actually quite interesting, especially the drill grinding one. It looks like it is the best drill grinding attachment I've ever seen and now sadly, I am going to start looking for it, so I guess I will be joining the ranks of members trying to find that one.

I've not used the Clarkson for sharpening drills thus far, but have used it for grinding the relief on some home made square thread taps:

Hi Michael, you will find this forum very different from the PM forum, very delicate and refined, no dog eat dog here. I am also a member of the Home Shop Machinist forum which is a halfway house between the two. Clarkson cutter grinders are relatively common here so you will be able to get lots of advice on them.
