I recently stumbled across this astonishingly beautiful animation of a Gnome 9-B2 Monosoupape Assembly. I think anyone with even a passing interest in engineering will find it absolutely fascinating.
It's a YouTube video posted by a Dutch guy called Pierre Jansen, who should be encouraged to create many more such videos.

You are welcome Roy, and I couldn't agree more.

There are several others worth a look on his channel. I particularly liked his Sopwith Camel Vickers machine gun. Here's a link…

That was truly amazing, not only for the skills that were available during WWl but for the devotion of this chap in producing the video. I'm also in awe of the manufacture of the component parts some of which I wonder how they were produced without the benefits of today's cnc manufacturing. Phil

Now that's what I call animation!

I also share Phillip's awe about the skills of the component makers.

I have never seen a real-life engine rebuild go that smoothly.

That was an amazing and very interesting video. My Father joined the RAF in 1921 as an Engine Mechanic. I still have his beatuifuly written note book of the Gnome Monosoupape when he was on a course, firrst dated April 3rd 1923.. Watching the video and with this notebook in front of me I was able to folow his notes easily.. I remember him telling me that the plug leads were piano wire and needed constant re-tensioning due to the centrifical force on them. I still have, somewhere, the gauge he made while on that course to check tension. The wire is placed in and around a pillar, that moves against a scale when tension is increased.

                      Keith.
