Good Day,

I am located in Namibia, recently joined this group, and have been trying to source some of the books I see mentioned, such as Screwcutting in the Lathe – Martin Cleeve, and others by Harold Hall, etc.

These are sold by Tee Publishing, but they seem to consider Namibia so insignificant, they won't ship to Namibia! Can anyone tell where else I may obtain these books from? I have tried Amazon, but the pricing works out in some cases to more than 3 times the Tee price! ( Although Amazon shipping is a lot less)

As it is the Tee price ends up quite high – Since South Africa is our neighbour, I checked Tee shipping to SA ( they do..) , but for a 5BP book they charge 6BP shipping by post…I wanted books totalling 96BP – the shipping was given as 109BP….Wow…

      Regards

      Joe

Have you tried the second hand book repositories? Apart from saving money on the price of the books, you may find they use cheaper postal services. I'm think of Abe Books (various continents), worldofbooks, bookfinder, Blackwells etc. I've bought stuff from the US (I'm in the UK) and been surprised at the modest pricing of some purchases. You can also find second hand outlets via Amazon although I suspect you've already been there.

            Joe,

You could try Camden Miniature Steam Services, who sell a huge range of books, DVDs etc.

They do have restrictive postage to S Africa and some other African countries, because of losses when using ordinary post, so they use insured delivery which is very expensive. This may be why you have found other postage to be OTT.

Camden will send by ordinary post if the customer is prepared to risk having his parcel stolen/lost.

              Joe,

A glimmer of hope … I just looked at the Tee Publishing website and read this:
Foreign postage rates are calculated based on a formula within the website and the price will be shown at time of checkout, payment will be taken at this time also. If the price calculated by the system is excessive when we process your order we will review the postage and if required issue a refund to you for an excessive postage charged due to the formula error.
.

I would be inclined to ask them to review the postage before purchasing, rather than hoping for a refund.

Thanks to all for your responses.

I have had a look at the used books vendors – there are quite a number it seems. The US Amazon site has them all, new and used, although the new prices are crazy, as I said up to 3 time the UK price…

Re Tee publishing – the problem is not only the shipping cost, but the fact they they do not ship to Namibia, Even though they do to South Africa – 1000km away…

Thanks again to all, I will dig further and find a way!

I thought when you mentioned SA that you must have contacts there. blush

Just because Namibia isn't on the list of countries that one can choose from on their web site, doesn't mean that they wont ship there. Have you tried contacting them directly and asking them to quote for shipping on the books that interest you?
I am located in Canada only a few km from the US border, yet I generally find that postage is far cheaper from the UK than from the US to here. In the past I have ordered books from TEE, Camden Miniature Steam and My-HobbyStore (which no longer seems to list books) and have found the customer service from all three to be excellent and queries answered promptly.

Again, thank you all for the response. I have found a number of possible sources now, so maybe we will get somewhere! I found 'specialinterestmodelbooks' has all I want as well, although they are more expensive, but there shipping is a lot less than Tee, and they do seem to ship to Namibia…We will get there!

Clivel – I did contact them direct – their response –

Thank you for your email, unfortunately we do not despatch to Namibia we only despatch to the countries on our website

                          Thanks

Bookdepository all one word Google it some great prices on 2nd hand books

Also have a look at a site called scribd – for 8 dollars a month you get full and proper legal access to all sorts of electronic books – for example the crowood metalworking series – approved by the publishers.

Or alternately you can just pay a once only 8 fee and get access for one month then come back and pay another 8 dollars whenever you want another month. Well worth a look, doesn't cost anything to search the site.

is the cheapest place I have found to ship books internationally to Australia. They carry most of the model engineer books and Workshop Practice series etc.

Well, finally just went for it…

I did a trial on Amazon USA, Amazon UK, Bookdepository, Wordery (USA), Special Interest Model Books, and a few other smaller ones – mostly the latter did not have many of the titles, so I dumped them early in the game…

I chose all the titles I wanted, went all the way through to registering, and on some of the sites I had to go so far as to give my credit card details – (always a nagging worry at the back of the head, that..) and with some of the suppliers only then does one discover what the deal is.

Bookdepository does NOT ship anything to Namiba. Nor does Wordery ( a great site, good prices and huge selection, but..)

Special Interest books does ship here, but missed a number of the titles, prices were higher than Amazon UK, and I could get no info on how the goods are shipped.

Amazon USA did not have more than half the titles in house : the titles that they sourced and 'shipped' direct came from other vendors, Tee publishing, Bookdepository, etc, so at checkout the whole thing fell apart again…Also, they were much more expensive.

Amazon UK had ALL the titles ( plus some I did not even plan on getting, blast..) Ship direct to me, and for 23 books they were 198BP, 71BP shipping – Amazon USA for 17 of those 21 books were $380.00 and shipping $217.00. Amazon USA more than double the total cost, for less books!!

So. all done with Amazon UK, but they won't pack it till first week Jan, so Christmas will arrive 18 Jan for me…

It is a good life here in Swakopmund, but pursuing our kind of hobbies ( electronics, Metalwork/model engineering, model planes..) is a disaster of note…There is simply nothing available here, materials are a problem, tools are all chinese and of the lowest grade possible, etc. The Uranium mines nearby ( 50km to 100km away) are well supported by engineering suppliers – if you are into drill sizes starting at 50mm, lathe cutting tip tools with shanks around 30mm square..I end up importing everything, and the Customs chaps here are the second disaster – every time is a surprise as to what attracts duties, and how much they will be..

                                      What Fun!

Thanks to all for the tips!

                                      Regards
