      Good Evening

I have a strange problem with a recently acquired Albrecht 1/2 inch chuck and before I pull it to bits I wonder whether anyone has seen this behaviour before?

Holding the chuck in my hand, if I insert a drill bit and tighten it securely using both hands, the moment I release my grip on the hood it unwinds and loses its grip on the drill.. This happens on both 7mm and 11.5mm diameter drill bits.

      Any thoughts?

      Thanks

      Dave

          Try a very thorough degrease

Thanks Tony, I'll give that a try first.

            Cheers

You might like to take a look at Tom Lipton with much the same question – though not quite as severe.

              Try Youtube link here

He makes the point that the gripping efficiency of an Albrecht chuck is a compromise between a bit of lubrication to get the tightening to work, but too much lubrication stops the friction necessary to hold the drill securely. He also details how to get the thing to bits and what to expect to find inside.

              Good luck

              Simon

Really useful info, thanks. I hadn't appreciated the importance of a bit of appropriate friction in these things.
