I am trying to adjust stroke on this 14"shaper: the adjusting screw/gear mechanism appears jammed: difficult to see what is in there!b

Note the shaper appears to be a 2S, although it is identified on the hatch casting as "Alba 1". I have no jnfo on age or history. Any info on stroke adjustment or identification of the machine would be appreciated.

If the adjustment is like the acorn there is a knurled hand operated locknut and a square dead centre drive to move the stroke-length leadscrew nut inside the machine

If the LS nut ends up at either end of its travel then you need to know which way to undo it or damage will result to the inner workings

I would find an alba shaper user and get a 2A users advice

If you run the machine you can at least see which end of the stroke the nut is at, it will be either a tiny stroke or a full length stroke

You may also be able to access a view of the internals via the inspection plate and "figure things out" with a torch and an inspection mirror, the acorn has the leadscrew nut running along the centre of the bullwheel on its leadscrew

I have a useful manual in PDF so would need to send it via email – However, take a look here – lots of shaper info.:

            **LINK**

lathes-UK has the manual I have, as well as another, at rather silly prices, but the one I have is available via google..

Not sure what the problem is – the winder handle to adjust stroke fits over the square shaft, and there is a lock 'nut' a big round knurled nut that you must loosen to be able to turn the handle – the nut should only be hand tight.

The stroke position is done by moving the slide, but I'm sure that's not the issue…

This is mine, a 2S I believe – with NC'ed steppers added to X and Z – mid right side the square shaft is seen protruding, as is the round 'nut' to loosen.

Better view of it here, top-right.

              That's the bit on mine

I've had a couple of jamups over the years with the square drive

The knurled locknut is fine, it simply unscrews anticlockwise

His problem is the square drive won't budge under moderate force when he tries to adjust

Ok, Ive loosened the knurled locknut and the stroke is all the way forward. (at least now I understand HOW to adjust the stroke). Is it possible the leadscrew is disengaged from block/slider assembly? I need to move the block/slider assembly back towards the centre of the bull gear.

The bevel gear set driving the leadscrew is clearly visible at this time. All appears oily and shiny and in good condition.

Is this "Alba1" (which looks like a 2S) probably a very early 2S? I havent found any identifying markings other than the Alba1 cast into the hatch door.

Thanks for the photos and info, very helpful. I live in the Eastern Townships, outside Montreal, towards Sherbrooke.Don't have any info sources I know of.

How do I post phots on the site?

                    Uploading photos

You should be able to figure out the correct direction of rotation for your square drive end if you can see the connecting system

You are looking for the rotation direction that moves the nut(+slider block) towards the centre of the length of leadscrew, it is hopefully jammed at one end

Then you grimace and go for it…

I've had to do my own a couple of times, it's not a fun task

Looks like she'll need a makeover, your leadscrew nut may be worn out
