For those who don't know of, or have never been to, the AVRO museum in Woodford, I can only suggest

a visit. The enthusiasm of the volunteers running the museum is priceless.

Do the research for the best time to visit, allow at least five hours to do it all.

        Andrew,

What you saw was most likely Shuttleworth's Spitfire, for most of the day it was in the area performing aerobatics and a couple of times it headed your way and then came back.

Could well have been, as It came from the west. Although I had in mind the Shuttleworth Spitfire was clipped wing?

I mentioned this to Mrs Dave this morning, with a view to visiting. Her reply was “Woodford? Is that the one near Chingford?” Sigh.

              Andrew,

It is so I assume yours wasn't, its a bugger when you and I have such a varied source of vintage aircraft up and about most days from Duxford, Shuttleworth and Little Gransdon.

                Great video!

On Saturday my Brother and his band played RAF St Athan of their 80th Birthday of the RAF celebration. They were down to play immediately after the 'Hurricane Flypast' (the night was planned with military precision!)

I found the BBMF manifest online and it was actually a Spitfire out of Gloucester, and I ended up spending 25 minutes at the end of the runway alone and in the rain. As visibility was 2 miles and the cloudbase about 500 feet I assumed a no-show, and my brotehr confirmed this alter – they were only told at 7:30 (the eta) so he couldn't let me know.

Lucky Eastbourne got the full 'HLS' display two days running!

Phew, at least I remembered correctly; so I can't be losing too many marbles. Yep, mine was definitely the full elliptical wing, shortish nose and nicely rounded fin and rudder. So a relatively early mark. Having passed over me it did a gentle turn towards Cambridge, rather than Duxford as I'd expected. After that it was lost in the murk.

More heavy metal; the Catalina has just spent 5 minutes flying over the bungalow at around 1200 feet before heading towards Duxford. Wow, the wing looks big, a veritable plank. It's slow too, seems like you could keep up walking alongside.

Wednesday morning I was at Thetford, was surprised to see a B-1B Lancer fly overhead at low altitude, probably just taken off from Lakenheath.

With Mildenhall and Lakenheath close by, you see all sorts of interesting stuff, but a lot of the real interesting stuff only flies under darkness,

It must've been about 20 years back I heard the low beat of an obviously old but powerful engine, looked up and saw an unmistakeable Fairey Swordfish crawling overhead against the wind. I had time to run indoors, find a pair of binos and come out again for a closer look… teeth 2

Man, that got me out of the workshop in double quick time; the sound of something big and heavy. Sure enough the B17 has just flown directly over the bungalow heading for Cambridge. Looked very low, but considering it's a big aeroplane probably around a 1000 feet. Made my day.

Feeling better now, after a series of fumbles at the gliding club yesterday. sad

Yes I saw it heading toward Manchester not that high but we were a 1000ft above sea level. My son said looks to be going slowly.

Hi all, with regard to totally unexpected sightings, a long time ago I had completed a job on a small motorbike for a friend & thought I'd take it for a spin, eventually arriving at a fairly high viewpoint I decided a sit down & relax was called for, however my reverie was disturbed by what I took to be a tin of nails being hammered flat on a sheet of corrugated iron followed by a low pass from a Junkers 52M trimotor! a quick check confirmed that no time portals had opened nearby but a perusal of the local paper revealed that a movie was being made at nearby Harlaxton Manor about General Patton, starring George C Scott, with a scene where he inspected his troops outside his headquarters in Germany whilst the Junkers provided local colour, you couldn't make it up.

Done much the same been standing on an apex roof where used to live, two times got caught one slow could count the rivets and joints overhead. The other the turbulence was felt after it passed.

Paid a visit to RAF Cosford Bank Hol Monday, pass it every day last 12 years well worth while and free, just £3 to park. Make sure go in 3 buildings last ones not on the map back of Cold War hanger with engines to rockets.

Caught a trailer for a new TV show called 'Battle of Britain: Model Squadron', in which German and British RC enthusiasts will recreate the Battle of Britain in miniature. First episode Channel 4 Freeview, 8pm Sunday 9th Sept.

It may descend into TV nonsense, but the preview was promising. Civilisation may be about to collapse because young folk don't understand tape measures, but they do seem to have cracked 6-axis integrated accelerometer/magnetometers and virtual reality headsets. Perhaps there's hope for us yet.

                                                    Worth a look I think.
