I had a look and the nearest to Medway is about 10 miles North of us, then another waypoint is Herne Bay, nice for all the benefits people stuck there.

Wow that was a wait. Looks like they will aim to be over me about 3:50…

Big question… Will they follow the same track as last time or the straight-line route on Google maps?

            Half a mile of difference!

Passed over BAE Warton (aka Preston / Blackpool) at 3pm on schedule. Looking majestic and menacing!

Well I got myself over to the hill above Tatenhill, and saw it fly directly over our house! The hill isn't particularly high and she was virtually at the same level as the small group of guys who had the same idea as me.

                A bit more HERE.

You are the lucky ones, down here in Devon & Cornwall we will not see it as the nearest flightpath is Bristol tomorrow, my friend Brian has a bad back and cannot do the journey so he is not too happy with the Vulcan Trust having donated over many years to it and also serving in the RAF and seeing the Vulcan bombers close up on the bases.

                    Yes Richard

As another " Peninsular" dweller I agree – and a trip to Bristol is too far! However I have seen the Vulcan perform it's impressive climb , close up, on several occasions and that wonderful experience is indelibly etched into my brain!

Farewell V bomber – no doubt a quiet rest awaits you somewhere and future generations will just be able to look and try to imagine the thundering roar of engines propelling you vertically into the heavens!

I shall never forget, being on a RAF 'drome when there was a full scramble, impressive is not enough, chest pounding, a feeling not to be forgotten.

I will never forget the display at RAF Finningley (now aka Robin Hood Airport) some time back in the mid 80s(?). Took off and climbed pretty much vertically. You could feel the noise….

In 1958 I was a lowly National Service airman in 5004 Squadron Airfield Construction branch and we were sent on detachment to RAF Finningly to extended and reconstruct the perimeter tracks and enlarge the corners to allow the Vulcan Bombers to safely access the runway to carry out their practice circuit bumps (landings ). We had very close contact and site of the aircraft and on occasions we had to withdraw away from our working areas to allow multiple take-offs, on one occasion a plain white Vulcan arrived , the others were in camouflage , and the crew disappeared only to reappear a little while later, but when they took off you would have thought it was a Spitfire as it was practically vertical which was a super display of the power of the Vulcan, sadly missed and never to be forgotten.

It wasn't loud – I imagine it was travelling at a 'fuel efficient' speed for obvious reasons!

Apparently BBC Breakfast had some items about the Vulcan this morning (Tuesday), Might be interesting, have to see if it is available on the I Player.

The Vulcan may be grounded, but it appears that a Victor may be on its way to take it's place, there is also a Shackleton being restored. From what I'v heard it's a bit of a race to see which is first, although I think the Victor go air bourn on a fast taxi.

You will have to search for it but somewhere on YouTube is a video of a Victor taxiing at speed when it unfortunately began to lift off, much to the consternation of the pilot. I did land safely though, and just in time as it was going to run out of runway.

"a Victor taxiing at speed when it unfortunately began to lift off" … Must have been the later Mk, although even those were 'ground huggers'! One of the 'moments of interest' when we were on standby S&R in Cyprus was watching the Victor take-off with guesses as to how little runway would remain before lift-off. Probably the best looking of the V force, but better IN the air than getting there!

It made a final flight around Robin Hood airport yesterday. About 20 minutes with a veteran at the controls.

Re the Victor which accidentally took off, I found a second video yesterday with the actual pilot, a veteran Vulcan pilot. He explained that when he ordered his co-pilot to shut the throttles, the co-pilot simply froze. The pilot then had to let go of his controls and lean across to shut the throttles himself hence the brief take off.

I have a question. I know of the Doppler Effect, where the pitch of an approaching train horn or whistle rises, then falls as it passes and recedes. I have, however noticed that the whine of a jet aircraft, whether the Vulcan or the local police helicopter, appears to rise in pitch as it recedes. Any idea why this is?
