Need proper hifi to substantiate the difference between gold plated and silver plated wire. Your common high end audio setup from Currys wont cut it. For plugs its just for corrosion.
Other ways as well buy a good design and mod it for comparitive peanuts, end result comparable to off the shelf at 5 times the cost. Manufacturers use cheap diodes 10p each, caps 3p each and resistors 0.3p each, try a Vishay resistor on input stage at £10 each or Schotky diodes for regulation, Holcos resisters else where 12p each, you wont look back for the sake of £89.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. When I auditioned an LP12, SME combination I was immediatly struck by the fact that It rung like a bell. Ended up with Pink Triangle, Helius instead.

ME note:- The Pink Triangle turntables were made on a Colchester Triumph lathe by a couple of lovely chaps.

OTOH, some years earlier, when I bought my loudspeakers, I got ones that were twice the price of the one's I'd thought about (Monitor Audio MA2's instrad of the smaller MA84's) And still came away wishing I could have afforded the Quad ESL63's the shop was using as a reference

Good one Mark i had a Pink Triangle at first with the cheap Linn tonearm.

Law of diminishing returns could have gone valve setup plus ESL63 just way too big width wise.
Croft about 5 mile away use Holco resistors where i got the last lot from, do they know something others dont, went through that stage with Ion in Wales- Integrated amp worked better than their pre and mono blocks!
