I might need to put a new fitting in a plastic cover which caps off a modern car petrol tank. Can/should I use brass with a Viton seal or would stainless or some sort of engineering plastic or different seal material be better?

A new pump is around £300, there isn't anything wrong with this one, just the fool who was swinging on it and snapped off the original hosetail which is part of the one piece injection moulded partblush

Don't use silicone rubber for the seal

Thanks for the replies, I'll look in to this out of interest but my problem has solved itself, I paid £35 for a new pump in exchange for my old fully working unit with the snapped connector, apparently its common that people just want the pump from the sump, so as it's full working, it holds some value at the breakers and they did me a deal.

Russ the rubber you need to make things fuel proof is Nitrile, the spec for this is MIL-R-6855 class1. 10/15 years ago I was into making moulds for making rubber components for vintage Willys Jeeps, one part was the rubber gasket for the pouring spout for the war time vintage Jerry Cans, the old ones were a bit stuffed after 70+ years, so we made a hundred of those fron Nitrile, or some may know it as Buna -N. These bits were made for the Canterbury Military Vehicles Club, and I think some of our stuff got to the States. Seem to have lost the moulds in the earth quake of 5 years ago.
