Adverts on the forum

Is it just me or is the latest pop-up ad for all the mags in the publishers range a pain in the proverbial’s?

We are back to the earlier days of this forum where ads crippled it. This latest pop-up has no immediately obvious cancel or minimise tab and prevents viewing of the forum. It would appear to be a waste of space as, as subscribers to the forum we are fully aware of the other titles anyway.

Please get it deleted, or at least add a minimise tab.

Of the several forums I visit this is the slowest of any, all due to the ads

If it’s the one I’m seeing then there is an “x” for closure in the upper RH corner. It doesn’t stand out though due to the (deliberate?) lack of contrast.

I found those wrecthed “Black Friday” ads particularly annoying. Sent that nonsense back whence it originated… the USA.

Nor was I impressed to find the latest issue of the magazine (ME) has a double spread of advertisements as its centre- spread – ads that were all perfectly happy and perfectly accessible in the end pages and back cover.

I may sometimes rely on the suppliers and their advertisements, and they do fund this Forum, but I don’t like being treated like an idiot in the process.

If it is the one I had come up the other day then I closed it as Clive says.

If you take a look at other forums that list the number of people on line, very often the “Guests” outweight the registered members so many visits from people who are not “subscribed” I just looked at MEM, that is a big percentage who may not know what else was done. Even of the registered users a lot here are not subscribers to the mag so get what they come here for for free so an advert or three is a small price to pay.

Interesting that people are seeing this advert presenting as a pop-up

… on my iPad, it just appears like another post [albeit without any credentials] in the sequence.

The pop up does not come up every time and the same ad in a smaller format is down the side which may be what you are seeing. The small one alternates with a few other Mortons ones.

Timely post, the Black Friday advert is really grating on me now ! The new forum has settled down now and I and most others pop on to it quite a few times during the day.

Try using the Brave browser then you do not get hardly any adverts ANYWHERE

Has the Forum “settled down now”?

I find the logging-in flakey, often taking two or even three attempts, but it does say it has failed until you see the reply entry form has not appeared below any thread.

The [Ctrl+Home] seems to have disappeared, too.

So although irritating, misplaced ads like that patronising “Black Friday” one sprawling across the screen, is really the lesser problem.

The problem is the different platforms have different screen sizes & Format. What looks OK on a PC Screen will probably be too small on a tablet and tiny on a phone as well as being the wrong way round as they are usally used in portrate unless you want to be scrolling sideways and back to read each line. The software is “optimised” for each type of device.

The BF advert fills most of a phone screen and the close “x” is black on a dark grey background and nearly off screen.  Stupid UI design.

Graham been a Brave user for some time now but of late add blocking doesn’t work across my 3 devices. I have the Trackers & ads blocking set to ‘standard’ would your be the same or ‘aggressive’  ?

Adapting to different devices is one thing the new forum does noticeably better than the old.   But, if anything, the forum seems to optimise better on small portrait screens than big landscapes.  She adapts rather than standardises though, so the look and feel isn’t quite stable.

Hi Gents, thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

I finally managed to spot the X on the frame after adjusting the brill and contrast on my monitor; I’m running an old DELL Lattitude with win 7 and will probably upgrade in the Jan sales

As regards changing browsers, why should I bother. The forum is a pale shadow of what it was previously and more of this sort of thing will only cause more browsers to give up. Note that this has NO reflection on the content.

Despite what we are told, the repeated changing adverts DO slow down refresh times. Another free forum that I am on is noted for fast loading and has no adverts. It is funded from the sale of service sheets and has probably more members than this one as well as excellent content

I have a strong suspicion they will continue (possibly with movement of the cancel X) for a long time yet, or until the bean counters decide that the cost of constant changes to the software are not supported by the numbers viewing.

It only takes a click on one of the BF adverts to see why

Like most companies that have a Black Friday promotion it runs for at least the week that the Friday falsl in, some  start them even earlier. This also allows stores selling to actual people not through the net to attract people who may be working in the week and can’t visit the store until Saturday or Sunday. And from that you should be able to deduce that nobody is in the office to remove the adverts until Monday😉

No such thing really as Black Friday is there?

It’s been an event that now extends to a week for sometime now. Should be called Black week.

Anyway why is it called “black”?, I have no idea…

Possibly as it is associated with the last pay cheque before Xmas people are in the black and able to buy rather than being in the red.
