I posted a photo of progress on this engine the other day and Ron asked why I had used ball bearings rather than bronze, I think this video should answer that.

ARC's 686 bearings straight off the shelf, not cleaned, no additional lubrication, I paid full price and I don't get any commission but they seem to run quite well.

Wow! 4 min. 22 sec. to come to a complete stop… nigh on perpetual motion… devil … can't complain about those bearings.

          George.

Wow Jason, I know that good ball bearings are free running but I would never have guessed for that long, certainly proves your point. The last 30 seconds when there is less momentum show just how free it runs, you certainly havnt got any friction to worry about there.

The flywheel, very nice, have you machined that from solid..?

              Jason,

That is indeed a long running time.

The late Roy Darlington well known for Stirling engines used to tell me that in certain cases to reduce further friction, it was a good idea to wash out the open bearings in paraffin before use, but in your case it seems unnecessary.

I may well give them a flush out before final assembly, at least that way if the engine does not work by give it a good spin and keeping the video short I can claim it's a runnersecret

Ron, its a casting off e-bay. I have bought a few from the same guy and they are good quality, he used to cast fr the old owners of College Engineering. Since the video I have had a good chew at the hub as it was too big for the 6mm PGMS shaft that I used.

                  Hi Jason,

Any chance of a link for the flywheel castings please?

                  Cheers, Martin

Thanks for the flywheel link Jason, I see he does a 6 inch version which is just about right for my scale on the engine.

I have not actually done the strip and degrease of the bearings I use, and most are shielded bearings. I think the general idea is to remove the shields, and the grease, but then use a very light oil in the smallest amount. On little bearings(3 mm/4 mm bore) a drop on the end of a pin.
