      …Hi forum,

A question, which is quite a personal choice I guess… I'm building my Stuart S50, which is now going quite well… only the eccentric sheave to go , but I'm wondering in advance, about colour.

Some part of me is saying, it's a Stuart, do it in Stuart colours, and another side of me is saying that I should do it differently, and when I say different, I'm wondering about Crimson.

I help out at Claymills and a few of the horizontal engines are done in a dusky red/brown which I assume is crimson.

Any thoughts? Any at all… personal opinions gratefully accepted too. I'm wondering if a standard colour Stuart is more saleable also?

      Cheers

      Ian

          Ian,

It's your engine and you can do whatever you decide to do. The original colour of my Ruston Proctor engine was a dull green colour which I did not like and I painted it in Crimson.

I suspect you are looking for something a little duskier than this: **LINK**

Something like that… humbrol 20 perhaps. VERY difficult to see on the monitor without having it colour tuned.

I really like the look of the crimson against brass and steel. Both my Beam and marine single are done in Dark Brunswick green, but 2 pack, and they don't like steam…. softening when it gets hot. Seems to be fine with the oil, but they do soften.

The humbrol colour range in enamel is quite limited, so I may have to go to Phoenix or elsewhere.

              Cheers

Crimson colour using 2 pack polyurethane car paint.  (I have used used 2 pack on full sized engines before ane it stood up to years of abuse and not affected by the heat.  Time will tell with this one. Fingers crossed !)

The Minnie in my avitar and also the Benson below are done in Phoenix "Fowler Showman's Red" which is not a dark or blue as some Crimsons. Several other engines in my album in various shades of red to crimson done in halfords spray cans.

Looks great Jason! And your hit and miss engines, which I am tempted with. Is the zero hit and miss a kit?

I have painted my Stuart 600 gas/petrol engine in navy blue, same as my Gardner engines, looks very good. Hornsby of Grantham gas and oil engines were painted green in the early days ,around 1910 they used a maroon ,nearest modern equivalent is Ford imperial maroon,. I have seen a Stuart 600 in black which looks very nice.Difficult to find a good enamel paint nowadays which is oil resistant ,some modern paints, particularly coach paints take a long time to harden off.

The Zero Seven is based on a barstock design by Dario Brisighella that was published in Model Engine Builder magazine, I altered the way it looked but mechanically it is the same. In fact it is very similar to a Redwing in lots of ways as he had previously made one of them. This is his Zero Six

Many thanks for all the info chaps. I have learnt that the colour at Claymills is based upon an old Burton Corporation Maroon. I'm in no rush though… just initial digging currently.

Great info and thanks for the link Jason RE the Hit and Miss engine. I'll do some diggin with that also, see if I can find the info on the plan and build. (I'm still on my first engine, but getting to grips with both the lathe and the mill quickly)

Regards and happy new year all!

It's coming along… finishing touches of colour going on, and raised lettering to highlight (not sure how I'm going to do that yet), but I'm quite happy with the colour choice. It's never 100% accurate when it comes to showing the colours online…. but so far so good.
