Why is your title mangled by the side list but not in the post itself and will this be fixed by the new software?

In Windows, just hover the mouse pointer over the short link and the destination url pops up in most (all?) browsers (bottom of screen in FF).

I fixed it. Michael's post title contained a Unicode back quote mark rather than an ordinary ' or " and for no apparent reason Unicode in titles can upset the forum, which is otherwise generally happy with it. It's a glitch.

Possibly Michael's Apple is set to automatically close quotes typographically and he is being punished for owning clever technology! Quotes. accents and apostrophes here.

No, the emoticons are another irritating feature. Emoticons started as strings of ordinary characters like : – ) for smiley face etc, and now we all have graphics quite a lot of text editors 'help' by officiously converting them into icons.  Unfortunate on a technical forum because the conversion is usually wrong. Best way to stop the conversion is to put spaces between likely candidates, always put a space in front of a )   The smiley above was generated by colon dash right bracket, and I had to put spaces in to stop it.

Shouldn't be necessary, but hey ho.

No … That’s just a ‘clever’ substitution table which ‘helpfully’ translates certain keystrokes.

Almost unbelievably; there is [or at least there was] an option in the forum software to enable or disable that function … and someone chose to have it switched ON
