I freely admit to some sloppy writing at times..and appalling typos. But this phrase from the BBC news site shows how standards are dropping everywhere.

These "proof masses" will be allowed to free-fall inside the spacecraft, and a laser system will then attempt to monitor their behaviour, looking for path deviations as small as a few picometres. This is well less than the diameter of an atom.

That's well bad like, know what I mean?

Another of my TV favourite phrases is "almost exactly".

Hmmmm…I can’t help thinking the author started out with the words ‘well within…’ before being the victim of some rather incompetent editing further down the chain….

Or maybe I’ll being too generous..!?

All depends what you mean by "few". Atomic diameters are in the range about 50 – 500 pm. The LISA experiment can measure down to about 20 pm – about the radius of a neutral hydrogen atom.

I seem to remember dad saying about time announcements on radio RNZAF/ RAF war time as "The approximate exact time is XX.XXhrs" because by the time it was announced that time had gone. It may have continued into his time as a technician with the NZ Broadcasting Service.

My irritants are…. 'Like' after every other word &… 'can you borrow me' … instead of 'can you lend me' or ' can I borrow'…

                                          ". . .you know . . ."

Every time I hear that I wish I was there to shout at them –

"No I f***en well don't know, you moron!"

"So, . . ." at the start of any sentence is just another Americanism that's been imported.

I wonder how many people had a period in very early school life when they and others used the word ift rather than if.

winkA infants school teacher had to tell lots and lots of people over and over again to stop using it. Pity really as it sounds nicer than if. I wonder ift it was usual or uncommon.

My daughter took degrees in English and kept insisting to me that 'language is organic'. I followed by arguing that it's insubstantial and unbestowed of any life apart from that anthropomorphised upon it.

'Organic vegetables' is my personal hatred in terminology. Where can i buy inorganic veggies?
