      Hey All,

My father has unfortunately passed away and we have a varied book collection he has built over 60 years. Does anyone know of book dealers who would be interested and/or ways of reviewing the collection?

The collection covers many forms of engineering and some date from the circa 1850. Some are in excellent condition whereas some aren’t as he had an eye for specific volumes and would buy in the best condition he could find them.

      I appreciate your advise.

      Kath

Are you looking to sell the whole collection as one lot?

What size is the collection? 20? 200?

If you want to sell individually, homeworkshop.org.uk would be a good place to list and sell.

For any that have the title on the spine, line them up on a shelf and take some good photographs. That is a lot quicker than listing by hand. Review the photographs for clarity before using as part of any sale listing.

If you upload the photographs here, you would receive some honest opinions of their commonality, rarity and maybe value.

Tee Publishing sell rare and out-of-print books in this field. I have no idea if they buy collections. G&M Tools also have a lot of similar books for sale on their website, but how they obtain them, I have no idea.

Be aware that in using a commercial dealer/seller, you will likely receive 5% of their value, but it will be cash in your hand that day. You can increase that value by selling them yourself, but you will still have some left after a year of trying.

I believe we have around 500 books. He was an avid collector.

Thank you for the advice; I will check them all out.

              That’s a lot of books!

Whereabouts in the country are they?

With so many books you don’t really have any choice but to go through and list them, so you can then send the list to anyone who asks.

Title, author, date, approximate condition are the important ones.

You can get an idea of value from abebooks.com, but these are selling prices, after having the book on their shelves for years. Also don’t forget that modern houses do not have the room for encyclopaedias and similar, in the end I recycled most of mine, just kept the plates.

                  Hello Kath,

I don’t know anything about him or his business, but he advertises in the Oldie magazine. He says he has been selling books in Cambridge for 40 years. He handles libraries and book accumulations. Your father’s collection would seem to fall into that category.

It might be worth giving him a call. His name is Hugh Harding
