      1) Can I enable notifications for Personal Messages, somehow? Or is it just a matter of looking top right when I visit?

      2) Photos. It says 600 wide max; Is that really still the limit?

          1. Settings top left green bar and then My Account to set e-mail notification of PMs

          2. No you can put in larger and software will adjust it.

1: Yes, somewhere. I think it's under the profile settings, but isn't obvious. I certainly get an email notification that I have a PM

2: As a default I upload pictures that are 1024×768 so it's clearly nonsense

I think the software shrinks big pictures doesn't it? We used to have problems with people who were too lazy to downsize their pictures and they splurged outside the display section in the middle of the screen so it had to be automatic.
If you have a big picture it probably can be cropped so we can get maximum detail in the important part rather than 50% background and not really able to see the finer points of your work. Unless of course you need to hide the crappy surface finish surprise

An easy way to resize pictures is to use screen grabbing software, Just open your digital camera image on the screen, select the area you want to post and press capture. then save and rename the captured part of the image as a JPG. It will be a fraction of the size of the original. It only takes a few seconds to do.

Folks are confusing two different things.

600 pixels is the maximum size to set linked pictures inserted with the green landscape icon and not overlap the stuff to the right.

Album images, inserted with the black camera, get automatically reduced to 1024 pixels in the longest dimension and displayed at 512 pixels wide.

But larger still fit without causing problems, 50% of what I put here that is hosted on PB is 640 wide and there is room for more. Just tried a 1024 hosted image and that was resized without going over the right hand side.

                      1024 sized

I know the discussion above is about number of pixels, but that relates to the file size of the image. I've taken to emailing myself the picture I want to post, which automatically (W10) re-sizes it for a sensible number of bytes rather than the original. Typically 2 – 3 Mb drops to say 100Kb. It only seems fair not to clutter the forum server with whole lot of unnecessary file space.

Are you saying this isn't necessary, and the album upload process re-formats/compresses the file size to reduce it to a sensible number of Kb?

The process doesn't seem to impair the definition of the posted picture, though that may be the limitations of my screen (and eyesight!).

For some reason my pc now pops up a large picture if the original is larger, which is fine for the 1024 one above,

Don't know why it started it, possibly the last W10 update!  dont know.  Using Firefox. Maybe there's an option somewhere.

This is bigger, 3000 wide – just to see what happens:

Yup, resized to 1024, but the jpeg  conversion isn't as good as it would have been if I'd used  photoshop.

One advantage of uploading a large image to an album is that if clicked it will come up much larger which is very useful where detail needs to be seen. Useful for people asking what/who/ when etc about their latest boot sale find and such like.

It would seem the forum software's last update fixed the issue, by automatically resizing linked images.

That would explain why we don't see people messing up the forum by linking big images any more.

                                    Neil

I resized those to 600 and 200. It seems that around 500 (possibly 512) is the size the forum software defaults to for linked and gallery images.
