      All,

I am currlntly building a 6" Burrell and am trying to source drive gears economically. The crank and second shaft are approx 10" apart (there is some flexibility in this dimension as I have not drilled the horn plates yet. I am after approx 3:1 and 4:1 ratios. So ideally i need 4" and 16" gear (4:1), and 5" and 15" (3:1) gears. I have seen the price some suppliers have been asking and refuse to pay that much so I am looking at allsorts of alternatives (such as roller shutter door suppliers etc steel or cast considered, other similar ratios and centre bore etc considered (I have scoured the local scrap yards but feel I could be at it for years before finding what I want).. Has anyone got any cheapish solutions

Incidentally I have spare flywheel casting (spoked) if anyone is interested (approx 2ft dia)

      Thanks

      Chris

Why not cut them yourself? either from castings or flame cut blanks plus a few cutters.

              Chris,

I am currently building a 6" Burrell traction engine to the EKP design, and have almost finished cutting the gears myself, ( have a look at my photos ), If I can be of any help please contact me on robertg.green@virgin.net ,

Are you working from plans , or have you designed it yourself, you could always use the EKP castings.

              Richard.

The Great Northern Steam Company has just called in the receivers so keep your eyes open, sad that this has happened but that is life

Many of the model traction engine companies offer a gear cutting service if you wish to provide the blanks.

                      Ok,

Lots of good advise there. I really am looking for a cheap solution, so at the moment the lead option is to get some blanks flame cut and machine myself.

Thanks to all who have responded.
