Hi guys, im new to this forum but I’ve been model engineering for a while. I’ve recently set my mind on a sentinel loco. Mainly becuase my grandad started it a long time ago and built the stuart D10 and the chasis. so I want to pick up where it was left and complete it. I have amanaged to root out 6 of the original copies of the magazines with the relevant bits of articles however i am missing a fair few. any help with where to find the others or any relevant information from others is greatly appreciated, many thanks all.
Hi Cameron, welcome to the forum. You do not say where the design was printed ? If model engineer then I may be able to help – as I have copies going back to about 1940. copies can be found on the bay if you know what you need ? Best wishes, Noel.
I wanted to design a Gauge ‘3’ Sentinel a few years back and originally started out with the ‘Sirena’ drawings. I quickly discovered that they were not true (enough) to scale for my needs and eventually found the original makers GAs and worked from those.
So in brief, I’m sure I have a full set of the ‘Sirena’ articles already scanned somewhere. I also have my (2D) CAD drawings (as a number of A4 sheets in PDF form) should they be useful to you. If you PM me with your email address, I will send you what I can find.
Below are some images of one of the G3 engines built to my drawings (about six have been made so far, plus the two original protoypes). They have laser cut frames with resin cast bodies and are battery electric powered with R/C controls. They make very nice chunky little locos for a small exhibition layout or garden railway.
PS Gauge ‘3’ is 2.5″ gauge Cameron (I use a scale ratio 1:22.6 – or 13.5mm / 17/32″ ) – so exactly half-scale for a “scale” 5″ engine, should you need to scale my drawings up. I suspect (I cannot remember now) that Sirena was probably 1″ scale (G3 also used to be 1/2″) but there were other differences too. Not a problem really if you just want a nice working 5″ loco.
Hi Noel, They were all published in model engineers in 1961, volumes 124 and 125. Having now seen the list of articles posted here I realise I am missing more than I thought. Having looked online I can find some of the copies but not all of them.
If none of us can help there is always a local club. You would find not only help with construction but with luck access to the library and the ME copies you need, just a thought ! Noel.
Thank you all for the help. I have access now to a full set of drawings. When I start construction I will post updates and photos into this thread to keep all up to date with what I am on with. It will be slow progress but progress nonetheless as only get time on a sunday to work on projects. Many thanks again to everyone that has helped and given their time to help me get the files.
<li style=”text-align: left;”>Not had much chance to get any sentinel work done in the shed but have just finished off a Stuart S50 steam plant and steamed it today. The only work for the sentinel I have done this weekend is drawn out and assembled the sheet work for the body in cardboard to give me an idea of size of the loco. That’s all that I’ve got done this weekend unfortunately but progress still.
