Spelling and grammar
Hi Harold
When you wrote articles for me to put in Model Engineers' Workshop, they were almost word perfect.
There were 2 or 3 words you always got wrong but as I was aware of them, they did not cause a problem. I think groove was always written grove but I can't remember the others.
We had an error in Mick Knights beginners series which neither I nor Diane spotted.
This I think was that Mick referred to magnesium instead of manganese in his formula for steel. Also, there are half a dozen other words Mick gets wrong on a regular basis.
I have since found out that Mick is dislexic but he still writes enjoyable articles.
So, anyone can wrote articles, some just need more editing than others.
I would rather have the spelling and grammar incorrect than the drawings incorrect.
Diane is a very good speller and picks up most errors I make and hopefully I pick up most that she misses. I do use a spell checker but that does not correct everything so I still have to be aware of the gramatical use of some words.
Sometimes, if I am not sure, I open Word or my email package and type the offending words in, sometimes I do an Internet search for words I don't understand the meaning of.
I do have a few grammar books and on occasion refer to them or read a chapter or two.
I don't remember doing English at school, I know I must have, but what we did I have no idea.
In an amateur environment spelling and grammar is not too important but in a professional environment a misspelt word in a specification for instance could cause a disaster.
A typical example is the company I worked for when I was about twenty. At about this time, aircraft engines kept falling off an aircraft. It was a large passenger jet, not sure which one but I think it had an engine in the tail as well as on the wings.
My company made the engine mounting bolts for this plane. The management were producing bricks from their rear ends. It turns out the material was the wrong specification, but it did cause some anguish at the time.
regards David
