New lathes are sold with three jaw chucks. Why? Because the order for an independent four jaw chuck will arrive a few months later.

My three jaw chuck for the Myford lacked its backplate for years. I just did not use it. It was refitted about four months ago to hold a fly cutter. I would not use it for anything else.

In the almost twenty years I've owned a lathe, I've used the faceplate once. I've never turned between centres. I only use the four jaw when the work isn't round. The three jaw chuck the lathe came with is fitted for nearly all my work. I do have an ER32 chuck, which I use when suitable parts need to be mounted in the mill.

My WM250 has a 3 bolt flange, as did the min-lathe, so chuck changes are quick and easy.

Unfortunately, the solution to the common shortcomings of the three jaw scroll chuck which is a four jaw independent will not wash with many people who are either too lazy or too impatient to learn how to use one. Every lathe should have both types ready to use and the choice depends on the degree of accuracy needed for the job at the time.

            Hi Guys,

This how I get around run out issues with my three jaw chuck. Note, you still have to put something in the jaws to tension them.

I made three alloy pieces, and drilled and threaded the jaws M6. As you can see from the pictures I use CSK screws to secure them. I made several jaws so that I can simply replace them as needed.
