hello all iv been a suscriber of model engineer for some while now and been building a battery loco for about 6 months based around a tich chassis, im wondering why is electric loco’s not really modeled in this scale? iv nearlly finished my project just currently waiting for some sheet meterail to make the roof and bonnet, it has a 300 watt motor and runs on 24volts amazeing what you can fit around a tich chassis this is the biggest enjoyment for me squezing to big off equipment in to something to small,

has any one else on here done a battery loco in this gauge i will upload some pictures very shortly im very pleased with the power this has and hapilly pulls my-self and my wife at over 30 stone with the throttle barelly open and on 12v so when running on the full 24 volts i thinks it will be quite a powerfull little model

          Hi Michael,

          Like this you mean

Built it for my grand-daughter but it’s more fun than it has any right to be, currently still refusing to paint it pink There are a few more photos in my album.

              Hi

I’m making a tiny shunter in 3 1/2″ gauge too – when my lathe is fully functional again!

A few more (bad) pictures in my album.

Are you making it from drawings?

Sort of – basic drawings in Corel Draw made by scaling off of photos.

Update! As mentioned elsewhere, mine pulled 28 stone on 12V 80W motor

Lack of adhesion meant we had a slight assist at teh start.

In answer to your initial question I think until recently (20 yrs) standard car batteries were too big to fit in the smaller body of a 3 1/2 loco. Even in 5 inch a Class 08 needs a modern small width car battery. By the time the batteries got small enough everyone had started building 5 inch (steam) locos anyway.

Perhaps this is a way to get past all the boiler regs. go electric with electronic sound effects. Now there is a thought.

Is it possible a new class of Loco with electric propulsion hitting the rails, the boiler is a big prpoblem for modellers with small workshops and at the moment the boiler I need is over £1300 and the time scale is now 9 months.

At that cost and time scale I could well electrify the steam loco, what do you think ?

I am after all a realist, not a purist.

Neil, Andy …. wot about a construction article for ME (With drawings etc)

I would like a 3 1/2 electric, so I can run while I am building my steamer (and waiting for the boiler)

                            Hi Dave,

I exchanged emails with David Clark a couple of months back and he's interested in an article on D604. I have drawings, but they are working ones I need to tidy up and dimension, a fair chunk of text..

I don't plan to do an absolute beginner's article, I will aim it at folks with basic turning and milling skills. This means not many photos of setups, mostly of components and stages in the build.

I spent about £100, but that was with a donated motor and batteries (from a fire alarm) and the luck of a big sheet of ~1mm brass in stock for the platework.

problem is I got distracted from finishing the windows on Sunday, and ended up drawing out a general arrangement for D707 and 0-6-0 in 7 1/4" gauge. My working name is "The Beast"
