      Good Morning.

Can anybody help me with some advice on repairing rebuilding a boiler of a 2" scale clayton undertype.

I picked up what IO though was a bargain of ebay but it has turned out to be a bit of a headache but that another story.

The boiler is a bit roughly put together it has a couple of leaks which I have repaired but Im not happy with the state of the smoke tubes.

They have been silver soldered then flattened to keep in place it looks quite a mess.

The main shell of the boiler is in excellent condition and with a little bit of work Im sure it will be ok.

What I want to know is, can I drill out the smoke tubes and replace them with new tubes, is this normal practice, not recommended or too tricky.

I cant stretch to replacing the boiler so repairing might be my only option.

      Thanks

      Neil

The best answer has to be 'ask the person who will be testing the boiler for their advice'.

Neils advice is definitely the best for the first step. I'm assuming that the boiler is an all copper one using the correct thicknesses of copper. If so then it should be possible to drill the tubes from both ends to remove them and replace with new ones, silver soldered into position.

The boiler and tubes will have to be VERY clean, possibly pickled in a fresh acid bath as should the silver solder (Easiflo No 2).

Drilling out the old tubes needs to be done very carefully with a drill that is not too sharp or it will grab in the copper. I'd be tempted to make up a counterbore with a pilot to fit the inside of the tube.

Please let us know how you get on with the repair.
