            Hi Paul

thats actually the one I’m considering buying, but am nervous that it maybe a small engine, so was looking for dimensions.

            regards

I think they were fairly small engines at full scale, maybe about the size of a GMT so a 2" model would come in at about 28"

                  Hi Everyone

I have been offered one of these engines WALLIS & STEEVENS "SIMPLICITY" STEAM ROLLER

3 inch scale, however it requires a boiler, but I can’t find any drawings to send to a boiler maker for costings.

if it’s too expensive I wouldn’t buy the engine, any help or link to a drawing would be brilliant.

                  regards

                    Plastow will sell individual drawings.

Though I would have thought someone like Western Steam would have made the 3" boiler before so may have the drawings on file or at least give you a ball park figure. It's going to be in excess of £2K I would think.

2k for a boiler? You can have my fully up and running engine for only a little more…

                        Hi All

I was surprised it was 2k and not starting at 4K for the boiler, I think this type of boiler is built differently than a normal traction engine.

So Graham what engine do you have?

                        Regards

I was thinking it was a bit simpler to make than the usual TE boiler as there is not the usual firebox, although it is a 3"/ft engine the full size was not large so the boiler won't be as big as say a 3£ road loco

Engineering In Miniature ran a build of the Robey No4 2" scale from January 1995 and a quick glance in the March of 1995 I found a drawing of the boiler for it. I have not been through all of mine so can't say when it ended

Could I please ask for some advice, I need to do something for my father in his gramophone.

the spindle is 5.20mm and I need to add a thread to the end, what size die would I need?
the thread will be a coarse thread which I will buy a tap to make the cap for the top.

I know it’s not specific but any advice would be great.

                                    thank you Del

                                          Hi All

could I please what material must use for valve rods, piston rods etc on traction engines. 1.5 inch to 3 inch scale for instance.

mild steel, bright steel, stainless etc?

                                          many thanks in advance

Stainless is usual for the two rods, most of the etc would need clarification as to what part it is but unlikely to need stainless

                                              Hi Jason

Sorry wasn’t very clear, it was mainly the piston rod and valve rod I was interested in.

                                              That’s great thank you

Not prototypical, but I am using 303 stainless steel for piston and valve rods, and associated nuts, on my 4" scale Burrells. Piston rods and nuts on the right, external threads are screwcut to ensure proper alignment:

Many thanks Andrew, this is for a 3 inch Burrell so stainless it is.

is 303 easy to cut thread onto?

In my experience 303 machines beautifully. For standard threads I use full form inserts, and they work very well on 303. The threads on the piston rods are 3/8" 32tpi Whitworth. I also find that 316 machines well, but 304 is a pig for some reason. According to a recent thread on Practical Machinist even the professionals hate it.
