      I jut bought a milling machine and it came with a lot of milling cutters. They have different MT sizes but almost all are 2 flute type. And their bottom is not flat. They seems to be new but are very rusty. I read that 2 flute mills are used for soft metals. But is there a reason not to use them for steel? That would be their use?

        2 flutes tend to have better chip capacity, so it lends itself to heavier cuts. On harder materials the cuts will be far less, so the feed must be reduced since it has half the number of teeth. So it will work just fine, it’s just less effective.

        I prefer carbide for harder steels and non-cosmetic work. HSS is nice for softer materials and for the best surface finish. I have a few razor sharp mills I keep for delicate work.

          Traditional 2-flute mills have one end tooth that continues to the centreline so the cutter can plunge directly into the work.  Could be used on any material.  Also called slot drills since they can cut slots much closer to size than a 4-flute end-mill.  What size taper does your mill have?  Do any of them fit it?  What machine is it and how much power?

            I have 2 clones of Thiel 158. They have MT5 taper. But I saw that it is easy to find adapters to smaller sizes. I need only to change the draw bar. Power is 2.2kW if I’m not wrong. Anyway I don’t plan to use the largest mills. They are to big for what I’m planning to do.

              Slotdrills and end mills are ground slightly hollow on the bottom, usually about a degree or so. It stops the edge dragging on the work when facing. But it is a right royal pain if you need to plunge in and create a flat bottomed hole. The hole will be flatter at the bottom than with drilling, but it won’t be perfectly flat.

                What you read about 2-flute cutters and softer metals is more applicable to modern cutters that are made specifically for aluminium. Due to the higher cutting speeds and higher chip loads that can be used on aluminium the amount of swarf produced can be quite high. The deeper gaps between the two cutting edges can better handle the removal of these high amounts of swarf. They also tend to have a higher helix angle to lift the swarf out of pockets faster than the traditional 30deg or so found on cutters like you have.

                  Just a related (slightly) question.  How common are MT shanks on milling cutters?  These are the first I’ve seen.

                    The sizes we see on here ,in the main tend to use various types of collet holder but older machines eg the centecs used 2MT. Carbide and inserts can’t easily be sharpened where as a HSS cutter can and an MT cutter keeps things nice and close to the spindle. I have several ! Noel

                      Here I saw for sale a lot of MT tools for milling machines. So at least in Romania are or were used.

                        I suppose it ok to clean HSS tools with sand blasting gun? I think it will not add a significant wear. I’m thinking about renting for one day a big air compressor on wheels, the one that has to be towed by a car. I want to clean many things and these mills are on the list.

                          That is not a good idea. The cutting edges and surface of the shanks are too delicate to do that to them.

                            Don’t clean hss with a sand blaster unless you have the facility to re-sharpen them.

                                  He means don’t blast the whole machine. OK to take them apart, carefully mask the machined surfaces and then blast Just the painted surfaces only of the individual parts.

                                    I thought the OP was talking about sandblasting the milling cutters?
