Hi, I have recently acquired a 1 1/2 inch Burrell SCC Devonshire Engine. I believe it is the one designed by A J Every. I am looking for a drawing or photo detail of the safety valve. I have been advised that in order to get it steam worthy and safe I would need to make adaptations to the one in the model. For instance, their is only one hole in one of the safety valve cylinders and the spring is loose plus I need more detail of the actual valve itself. I found a thread on union steam models on my phone but website seems corrupted on my PC? I am not a model engineer but have had the boiler pressure tested to 160psi and have run the engine on compressed air. Would eventually like to get appropriate safety certificates etc. Any help on where or how I can modify the safety valve would be much appreciated. Blueprints/drawings or photos.

Welcome Peter. I'm afraid that I cannot help with the Burrell SCC but it's a fair bet that someone on here will.

The best advice for a certificate is to join a local model engineering club or society. The problem will almost certainly be that the boiler inspector will want to examine the boiler without cleading or anything else that hides the boiler but, first find a boiler inspector willing to take a look.

The cost of a boiler test and insurance for public running will mostly be covered by the club subscription.

I have the drawings for this engine along with a set of castings etc that I bought from Aussie Windle a few years ago.

If you PM me your email you are welcome to a copy.

Thank You, the drawing above is the same as the safety valve I have on the Burrell. The question is whether it is safe. I guess a boiler inspector would be able to tell me whether it is functional. I think the people I showed the engine to were surprised that the hole was as small as it was below the ball bearing and that the pillar was solid on the left. Would a boiler inspector check the safety of the valve and the boiler?

As part of the steam test the boiler inspector will want to see that the safety valve opens at the working pressure of the boiler and then with a full fire going that it does not allow the pressure to get more than 10% above the working pressure
