      Hello,

As I said in my presentation, I'd like to start with model engineering with a simple engine. After searching extensively the web to find something to start with, I found the 0-4-0 little Gemma on Reeves website, where drawings and castings are to be found but in 5".

Do you think this could work in gauge 7 1/4" ?

      Many thanks,
      Jérémie

Greetings Jeremie, yes you can scale up this fine 5 inch gauge locomotive design to 71/4 in, but it is a lot of extra work, and I am not sure what, if any, castings would be available.

If you want to start as a beginner in model engineering, why not build an existing 0-4-0 design in that gauge, there are several good ones, Hercules from Reeves, Jessie, a well loved Ken Swan design, and Don Young also produced a couple of offerings, finally Martin Evan's Singapore is also well spoken of.

Choosing one of these designs would mean drawings and castings available, and you could always alter the cab and tank shape if you wanted something different.

          Regards

          Brian B

Thanks for replying. Yes indeed ! Jessie was my first choice but I heard from Reeves that they don't supply drawings for this model anymore. And Ken Swan passed away a few years ago… I then imagined to alter the Adams B4 from reeves to make it look closer to the Jessie but the casting set is incredibly expensive (from my opinion). I also contacted Horley for the Dock tank 0-4-0 but couldn't get any answer.

I started then looking towards the 5" catalogues and found the Gemma from Reeves's. I love the "early industrial" style and thought this would be great in 7 1/4". Scaling up the drawings to gauge 7.25 shouldn't be the tricky part, but indeed, they are no castings… Quite annoying for wheels and cylinders…

Some extra work will be necessary but I was thinking of using a 3D printer to get prototypes for all casting parts (bronze or cast iron). In a way Gemma could become also a nice 7 1/4" standard for beginners !

Well, the Tich is not among my favourite designs… but thanks for replying !

Any idea of where to get the drawings for JESSIE ?

                Thanks
