      @joeking2

I have a Suart d10 which I am told is the basis of a 5 inch gauge vertical boiler

      shunter.

I am told there was a series of articles on it many years ago in the model engineer but struggling to find.

Any help on locating any info would be much appreciated.

If anybody has built one / owns one would be pleased to hear from you.

      Thank you

      Joe

Starts with issue 3108 Vol 124

Put Sentinel into this search  to get all the issues

That was quick – many thanks indeed.

Found articles – engine called SIRENA by JJ Constable.

            Well pleased

              Hi Joe,

I scanned those articles a few years back when I was trying to design a 100HP Sentinel in Gauge 3. It looks like it builds into a robust 5" model but does deviate from prototype scale in a number of areas. I was very fortunate that a member of the Sentinel Drivers Society (the road type) had some original GAs of the engine that he kindly photographed for me. I spent some time re-drawing these full size in CAD (and adjusting for the parallax errors) before scaling it all down by 22.6 (to G3 size).

A friend made resin masters from the CAD drawings (two main body parts) and I built two frames/motor-gearboxes for the prototype/test models – obviously ours are battery electric models and half the size your 5" model would be. There is a photo of my version of the finished engine here:

I'm away travelling at the moment but if you PM me, I will dig out the scans of the articles and if you wanted the CAD (2D) then I'll provide that too (for personal use only).

              Regards,

              IanT

I too have the Constable articles scanned,it's one of those 'wouldn't it be nice' projects. I've seen a completed 5" version at Doncaster show. The wheelbase is very short. If anyone knows how well it runs I'd be very interested. In the meantime here's a couple of drawings I found on the interweb.
                  I've sent a pm to IanT.2109.jpg200hp.jpg

I have one half built from many years ago engine and boiler built never finished it (some day) saw one running at Cardiff track years ago went good and fast, remember something about the frame drawing I made my buffer beams solid steel for extra grip .

I'm building a Sirena at the moment. She's just over half built with the chassis almost complete,
