Why not get it from the horses mouth and not guesswork ?, ring them up Monday and ask them what the delivery times are.

well the horses mouth will no doubt tell me parts are ready to ship but my friend is still waiting for machined cylinders for his Penrose Grange after 6 months which makes me wonder how reliable they are on there products.

              Hi Anthony,
Unmachined castings should not be a problem and I know Polly had stocks of wheels two weeks ago. Hornguides were out of stock waiting for the foundry. I believe they order monthly so perhaps 5-6 week wait would be the max if an item sells out. I am pleased to say that quite a few other people like the Q1 so Polly have sold quite a few sets of bits!

                Hi Nick,
That’s good news I’m going to order some parts and hopefully pick them up at the Midlands Show will you and the Q1 be there?

                  Hi Anthony,
Living on the South Coast means a couple of longish round trips and some time off work to get the loco there and back. As I exhibited last year I may give it a miss and go to the ME show later in the year. I may ship the part built loco off to Polly as it will be at an interesting stage with its workings on view.
There should be some photos on view anyway.

Update on castings and other parts, Polly have plenty of stock and I will be working closely with them to make sure builders will have parts available to get Q1’s built and on the tracks as soon as possible!
Polly are anxious to know who Anthony’s friend is with the delay on Grange cylinders since they are unaware of a delivery problem or complaint. He is advised to make contact as soon as possible.

                      Hi all
I am getting on quite well with the q1 just about to start the axles
i would like to put a water pump in the loco rather than the tender, Nick says its possible  has anybody found out a good design/ castings ?

also crank webbs on the axles would it be best if these were made out of gauge plate or will mild steel do?
                      thanks Nigel

all the bits i have ordered off of polly model engineering  have been delvered fast and of a very good quailty

                        Hi Nigel,
The Axle pump eccentric is fitted between the cranks so you will have to make a crank axle without flywheel. The water pump is then fitted to the motion plate. Hard to get at for maintenence. If you have bought a set of drawings, the tender pump design will fit as it is based on the pump fitted to the Derby 4F design, which is between the cranks. Throw of the eccentric should be around 5mm to give 10mm stroke on the pump. Plunger diameter should be 8mm or so. Ready made pumps are sold by suppliers, I will check with Polly to see if their pump will fit.

                          Hi Nigel,
Re gauge plate its not needed. Just make sure what you use is flat and if you are pressing everything together and not brazing or silver soldering make sure your holes are true, i.e. parallel. This is one reason for using the flywheel and putting the water pump somewhere else, its easier to make a rigid well aligned crank axle.

                            hi all

                            Corrections to inner radius

The correction I am refering to relates to corrections under heading, ‘Crank axle assembly (6 lines down)’, that appeared in  Model Engineer Vol. 203 No. 4357.
I’ve located the centre of the radius with new measurments, but the new position puts the radius about 2 mm away from the large stetcher hole: Model Engineer drawing of frames in issue Vol. 202 No. 4353.

On the subject of castings, I had to give up building a loco due to comany not being able to supply or tell me delivery date for castings, it would be nice if companies adopted a more professional approach to business: it seems UK suppliers are indifferent to customer care.

                              Hi Tony
I have checked my drawings and will clarify: The top edge of the frame means the top edge of the complete frame not the notch at the back.
                              That should work.
Regarding castings as a very specialised hobby we are going to face increasing problems in the future as manufacturing in the UK withers away to almost nothing. Do model engineers realise how few cast iron foundries are left in this country? And how many of them want to produce a handful of castings anually at the sort of prices we want to pay? Anyway I believe there is no shortage of castings at Polly for the Q1!

                              Regards
                              Nick

A note to any current or prospective Q1 builders, The completed well worn prototype model and the new one being built for the series in ME will be on the Polly Models stand at the Sandown Park show. The second model is now at the running on air stage although probably not enough air available to run it.
I hope to be attending each day and will be happy to answer questions.
