There are numerous videos on the use of a shaper for gear cutting on the tube and with a few clever though simple bits can cut true form gears. The shaper is a much under rated machine tool, that often come up for sale and don’t cost that much. Thanks for raising this Jaques. Noel.

I’m now waiting for a CNC whizz to come up with a solution. Joe Noci has a CNC shaper, so couple that to a robust CNC dividing head and we’re off.

On a more serious note, this is similar to the Sunderland gear planer, which was noted for making high quality gears.
