I want to machine a replacement layshaft for the gearbox on a 1936 Indian motorbike. What material would be most suitable please? The  gear cluster runs on needle rollers. Thanks for any advice.

All the gearboxes I have worked on (cars) were made from ground case hardened steel and the needle rollers ran direct on the shaft. Depending on how long your shaft is it might be poss to finish grind it on a TC grinder between centres.

En16 or 24 and nitride it.

Thanks very much for the answers, chaps. Looks a bit too much for me so I think I’ll farm it out!🙂
