I have tried for a few weeks looking for 10BA raised countersunk screws in steel with a countersink angle of 90 degrees however I have had no luck. The only shop I have found (Modern-screws/Screw-shop) only seems to have them with a countersink angle of 100 degrees.

Ba-bolts only has them in brass which is not really suitable for my purposes. Does anyone have any spares or ideas about where I could source them?

Not without doing a comprehensive search.   My BA collection might have a few, but they’re mixed in a box, and unlikely to be 90°.  Nor do I know of a supplier.

Could you substitute metric or US?  Problem is BA is obsolescent, mostly sold to support older equipment, and rarely used by industry in anything new.   It’s slowly fading away.

Back in the day, virtually every head-type was available off-the-shelf for BA, now only a limited subset of the common types.   Though there’s New-Old-Stock about or they could be made to order (£££), finding BA can only get worse as the years roll by.  On a new build, I’d think twice before adopting BA.   Nothing wrong with the thread, the issue is availability.

Unfortunately I can’t substitute it with anything else since I am repairing an old item which used 10BA. M1.7 is interchangeable with these but they are even harder to source in raised countersunk steel.

The only help I can offer is to try talking to Alan at EKP supplies, they are manufacturers and if the number needed was viable they might be able to do a run. Good Luck. Noel.

Thanks I only need around 50 or at the very most 100. Most places seem to have a minimum order of 500. I guess periodically checking eBay for NOS will be my best bet but it could be years till some come up.

For that quantity, could machining a 10BA steel cheese head screw be an option? Rear tool to form the countersink; front tool to form the raised head. Convert the cross slide to lever-operated and use two stops. Lever operated collet chuck. Loading and unloading would take longer than the machining (stick with magnet each end and keep the spindle running).

In theory, if made to BS57, I think they should be 90°

Sorry, I don’t know a supplier, but it might be worth widening search terms to include “Instrument” head.

Is the 100deg. csk. item that you have identified that critical? On such a small head, ~0.120″ dia., the under-head gap will be tiny and the more obtuse angle will ensure that the outer rim is bedded down.

DC31k it certainly may be possible. I don’t have a lathe, but I managed to convert the 100 degree countersink screws that I had to 90 degree countersink on a drill press and a file (I know it’s not recommended however lateral pressure I used was extremely low) however the final width of the screw as I was removing material (although within tolerance) was not ideal and slightly too low.

I think that there may be enough material to convert a cheesehead screw however. I need to figure out how to make the front tool to form the raised head.

An earlier thread on this forum was enquiring about the origin of M1.7 threads.
One of the comments, by David Jupp, was that early Olympus cameras specified metric, but in reality the threads were BA

Not sure if that’s any help, but Luton Cameras specialised in older Olympus, so they may have a supplier.

You could try Clerkenwell screws in London. I have often been pleasantly surprised at their stock.

Do you know if Clerkenwell screws is still open? I tried ringing but I couldn’t get through.

Does anyone know if Items Mail Order Ltd stocks them? I don’t have a catalogue and he is closed until the 17th of March.
