We’ve just bought a part built 3 1/2″ gauge 3 cylinder LMS Jubilee 4-6-0. Any suggestions as to possible plans for this loco as we’ve been unsuccessful in finding plans for this loco?

Hi amorrison, I don’t know if any plans were made for a 3 1/2″ Jubilee, LBSC did a 2 1/2″ Jubilee class, with the name of Olympiade, and drawings can be had from Olympiade There was also a 5″ version called Galantea, and plans for that can be found at http://www.blackgates.co.uk/ But there was a Scot 3 1/2″ gauge By Henry Greenly, which is similar https://www.kennions.co.uk/royal-scot

        Regards Nick.

Reeves do 31/2 gauge Jubilee but I don’t think it is a 3 cylinder version

Hi MichaelR, the Reeves Jubilee is a 2-6-4 tank loco. Designed by Martin Evens, but does utilize some of LBSC’s standard castings.

From memory, which nowadays can be a bit iffy, I believe the 3.5″ Jubilee was called Doris by LBSC. I’m sure others on here will confirm or deny.

Doris was a black 5, LMS class 5MT

Hi, yes Duncan is correct, Doris is a black five, which was a 5MT loco, However, I’ve just looked at LBSC’s Olympiade notes, and on the first page he gives instructions of how to build it in 1 3/4″ 2 1/2″ 3 1/2″ and 5″gauges.

Thanks to everyone who has replied to my email, I am most grateful as I was unable to find anything which seemed relevant. As Nick has suggested it does seem to be a 3 1/2″ gauge version of LBSC’s Olympiade. I will get in touch with Reeves for the drawings and will get onto the 2 1/2″ Gauge Society who seem to have LBSC’s “words and music”. The first step will be to check what we have got.

                    Regards,

                    Alasdair

Hi amorrison, do make sure you know which model you have got, as drawings are not cheap. Reeves 2000 don’t do a version of Olympiade, and their Jubilee is only a two cylinder 2-6-4 model. EKP/Kennions only do 2 1/2″ castings for the Olympiade. So you will have to decide if any other castings for a 3 1/2″ model are suitable.

                      Regards Nick.

                        Nick,

Thanks. Age must be catching up with me. It does indeed look as if the part built loco is a 3 1/2″ inch gauge version of LBSCs Olympiade, as noted in the first page of his words and music for the loco which you kindly attached to your email. I have in fact ordered a copy of the 2 1/2″ gauge plans from Kennions. We seem to have a fairly complete built up chassis, although  further work is clearly required, a boiler, smokebox and tender. The boiler at first sight seems in reasonable condition but we will see how it goes when it is tested. In any events it looks like the basis for an interesting project for us. I haven’t come up so far with anyone’s comments on building one of these locos although the odd built or part built one seems to appear from time to time.

                        Regards

                        Alasdair
