This is another shop made one. Sadly I washed the black paint off in my ultrasonic cleaner. Reverted to fairy liquid after that.

It’s very robust and obviously I have no table with that v slot. What’s really weird is the knurled screw only pushes then clamp open. Wonder why.

It is a holder for a dial test indicator for measuring things on a surface plate. The base would typically be 6 in long and about 2 in square, with a ground base.
The screw is not opening the slot or hole per se; it is to make a fine position adjustment of the indicator that is held with a screw into the very end tread.
look up “mercer indicator stand”.

Because it’s not a clamp, it’s a fine adjustment for the DTI/gauge that is likely to be hung off it..

Here you go, very much a lash-up, just to show one use, and the sort of base you’re seeking.

Here used to compare the 6″ stack of Jo blocks to what I believe is a depth micrometer calibration gauge, rescued from a defunct metrology repair company.
I picked up a set of imperial & metric ones for very little money.
