I have a WM14 circa 2006 vintage which is making horrible graunchy noises from the gearbox. It is the same in high and low gear. I have recently replaced the plastic sacrificial gear which quietened it down for a while but i now feel  it is time to have a look at the rest of the gear train. Access to the gearbox is not obvious and I don’t want to do any superfluous stripping  down. Any advice please.

What was the wear pattern on the plastic gear you replaced? I think this is the one where the gear does not always travel as far a sit should so only part of the gear teeth width meshes and you get rapid wear.

Jason….when I replaced the sacrificial gear last time wear was even across the width of the gear but the teeth had been savaged. I had a crash sometime last year when an operation went wrong because of a badly secured workpiece ( should have taken more notice of the advice in your book). As already said the plastic gear was mutilated so I replaced that with the overoptimistic hope that all would be well. Not so,  obviously,  although this morning it was a bit quieter. Weather? or perhaps my tinnitus is a bit louder. I know what you mean about the uneven wear pattern on the plastic gear though. My mill had that from brand new but Warco put it right pdq. Have you stripped out the gears on yours?

No Mine are metal in the X3. The other two Siegs are belt straight from motor to spindle and very quiet.

Looking back it was someone with a WM18 with the problem
