Not to throw this thread off topic.
But it’s been my own experience that the best, extremely knowledgeable and quite obviously highly talented are almost universally modest in regards to just how exceptional they really are. In fact something called the Dunning Kruger Effect goes a long way towards explaining why if anyone is unfamiliar with the term. Unfortunately not all websites properly explain it’s fairly complex effect in enough detail or all that well. Most if not all of us are born with it, it can be extremely costly on a personal and even financial level in serious cases. And the best seem to inherently understand it even without ever hearing the term.
No doubt there’s been a few or even a handful equal to, or that possibly might or still are a bit better than Mr. Thomas was. Henry Maudslay to name just one would have been. He certainly had and still does have an effect even today on our modern world, and certainly on all of us here. But George also had the extremely rare combination of skills and knowledge to design, produce, clearly write about, and then properly explain his methods to the non professionals such as myself. So far, I’ve yet to see a modern equivalent in my opinion that might be noticeably better than GHT anywhere in print or videos, there’s still a few in my opinion that might be pretty close though. So by default, George has always been my benchmark over the last 20+ years. Given that, I’d have to adamantly disagree with you Gray, I’d rate you right up and alongside George since there’s no question you also have that exact same and all too rare combination of skills, machining knowledge, design and writing sense. In fact I’d be very surprised if George himself wouldn’t automatically think so if he were still with us. And I sincerely wish I could have said much the same to Mr. Thomas as well.
