Any kind sole have thoughts about thin thermal work gloves for general workshop use – no machining. The nitrile/vinyl/latex versions don’t help keep the finger tips cosy and cotton ones snag too easily. Am I asking for the impossible?

Have you tried the thin polyester work gloves with a rubber grip on the front. Like these

I use these on site when doing rough/dirty work, quite thin but should keep your pinkies a bit warmer too.

Look for mechanics gloves. Thicker and tougher than the normal latex type gloves.

Not really a glove, but when working in cold environment I discovered that it helps a lot if you use a hand cream. I’m not sure why. Maybe dry skin is more sensitive to cold.
I read about this when I was a child in a book where the main hero had to do some repairs in a high flying plane and he rubbed his hands with fat. First time when I got out in winter to have a snowball fight I used my mother’s hand cream and it made a difference.

I would imagine that any kind of grease would prevent evaporation so you wouldn’t get the chilling effect of the latent heat phase change loss.

                  regards Martin

I use oil grip gloves from the link provided above. They’re not cheap but have very thin leather palms and a fabric back. They really are good for general workshop use.

Tip I got from an old fly fisherman:

Thin cotton, or even better silk*, gloves with nitrile/vinyl/latex over the top. change over cloves as required.

                      Robert.

*He used surplus RAF flying under-gloves that were intended to be worn under leather gloves so maybe the idea is not so new.

I bought some top branded work gloves from a specialist supplier some time back. Both pairs were no where near the stated size so I have them to my wife. I now buy gloves from a local discount store as they have a few pair on display to check the size. So many “medium” size gloves are far too tight for comfort whilst others fit fine.

                          Hi,

I’m surprised nobody has said do not wear gloves when grinding, drilling ,turning, milling etc.

<li style=”text-align: left;”>Further to the information supplied by Macolm in his post of 11/12 , I had never heard of that company , but checked out their web site and eventually I ordered a set of their 295 gloves as most suitable for my purposes. They arrived today , complete with copies of their compliance with a number of standards . As had been said already ,  not cheap, but to me they look and feel worth every penny . Hope this information helps JimmieS in his decision making.
