This evening we received the sad news that Cherry Hill, probably one of the most skilled practitioners our hobby has ever seen, has passed on.

I had the pleasure of meeting Cherry a few times and was in awe of the minute detail of her models and the incredible quality of finish that she achieved. She first learned her machining skills in her father’s workshop, established around a 1913 Pittler lathe, which had originally been used to produce munitions parts.

Now is not the time to try and give a detailed account of her exceptional journey in professional and hobby engineering. The news has come too late for MEW 347, but future issues of Model Engineer and Model Engineer’s Workshop will both carry tributes to this remarkable lady.
