      Cherry Hill

i have just spoken to Cherry Hill’s sister, Rosalie Bamford.

Cherry passed away peacefully two days ago at the age of 93.

The funeral will be held at Worcester Crematorium, date and time to be arranged.

i know many of you will wish to attend and I will update this thread tomorrow with details.

i have emailed Martin Evans, editor of Model Engineer and I expect he will put an official announcement on the home page of this forum.

Update, Martin has been in touch with Mike Chrisp, so all is in hand.

Dave Clark, ex Editor of Model Engineer.

Another legend departs…  What dedication and determination she had to pursue her dreams and produce some of the best miniature creations ever seen. What a legacy she has left, though. She set a standard of quality, originality and quantity that few (if any) will ever achieve.

Very sad that we won’t see her again. Thank you, Cherry.

An amazing woman, one of a kind. I read somewhere that she used vintage machinery inc a Pittler lathe

Hi, a very nice person, I had a chat with her once, while having a dinner break at a Sandown Park exhibition, and she showed some interest about my exhibit in the ME competition there, she was truly a very good model engineer.

            Regards Nick.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Wonderfully patient and skilled woman, I wish I was fit to shine her shoes in an engineering context.</p>
Her models were beyond belief and her level of finishing was a credit to the workshop skills used in creating them.

Truly a legend in the hobby and her like will not be seen again.

              God bless Cherry. Xxx

A dedicated modeller who has passed on, leaving a good legacy, but a huge hole in the hobby.

Cherry had several lathes including a large bore Myford Connoisseur I believe. Geoff Shepherd (Model Engineers Workshop) visited Cherry’s workshop and wrote about it for a special bookazine I edited.

Hi dc1, I have that bookazine, it was in Autumn 2008, Setting up a Workshop, with several photos of her finished models, and there is several photos of her models in the 100 Great Models book from 2007, which was edited by David Carpenter.

Here’s a photo of a few, of one of her engines, that she let me take, while the glass casing was off.

                        Hi Nick

                        I remember those.

I still have several copies of the 100 great modes bookazine as well.

I had the honour of meeting her at the MEX 2012 exhibition at Ascot. She came to visit my Stepperhead lathe being demonstated. After she left the crowd and I where very impressed by her being present. A brilliant lady.

I always hoped to meet her, although as I understand it she was quite shy (if thats the right word). Her legacy is the excellent work she left behind.

                            Sad news indeed.

The passing of a truly unique and extremely talented model engineer – this news, although always inevitable, is sad indeed.

My wife and I were forntunate enough to meet her when all her models were brought together for a SMEE anniversary – very impressed with her personna at the time and definitely in awe of her incredible attention to detail and superb workmanship – a memorable person indeed

One of the giants of model engineering. I never met her but have had the privilege to see some of her models close up, sublime quality, a standard I aim to reach but never able to.

She dominated the ME Duke of Edinburgh awards when she was at her height.

Rest in peace Cherry, and thank you for your inspiration. Say hello to Tom Walshaw, Prof Chaddock and George Thomas etc, you are in good company. Hopefully there is a workshop somewhere…

Cherry won the DOE several times – nine, I think – but it was winning the Bradbury Winter Memorial Trophy for ‘Outstanding Mechanical Craftsmanship’ (eight times I believe) that gave her most pleasure and satisfaction and it was of those awards, it seemed to me, that she was most proud. I am glad I was able to see at least some of her work ‘in the flesh’ and to have been in her company on several occasions. A unique, gentlewoman with an outstanding and rare talent.
