      Hi

      Hi,

I am about to start attaching brass soles to some resin wood planes, but I have been making. Originally I was going to do this using screws, however it would be so much better if it was permanently attached with no obvious fixing.

See below for a couple of pictures while I’m trying to do, the brass in the picture is half inch thick, I will shortly be switching to quarter inch thick.

The criteria for the glue are as follows:

      1) obviously, it needs to form a very strong and permanent bond

      2) it would need some gap filling capability

      3) easy to use and not messy

      4) not an immediate set, to allow me time to ensure that the 2 parts perfectly aligned

The two obvious candidates are superglue, and epoxy adhesive. Epoxy sounds good, although it is messy, requires mixing, is prone to squeeze out, et cetera.

If anybody has any thoughts, or any brand recommendations, that would be great.

I would experiment with CT 1 ! It is NOT a silicone, seems to stick to almost anything, sets much harder than silicone IS made to be used as an adhesive, though not cheap even after opening has a long shelf life, the cartridge I used to day was opened back in April. It’s a single pack product so no mixing. Cleanliness is the key, so clean with a solvent first. Good luck, Noel.

          Thanks, Noel

I had never noticed CT1 but it does indeed look promising:

Given the price, it’s good to hear that it lasts a while after opening.

Thanks Noel that does look interesting, and in fact I was wondering about “no nails” type adhesives. The only feature I can see on the list that might render CT1 unsuitable, is that it is apparently “flexible“. I need my plane sole to stay exactly where it was set. it may well be, that under pressure the CT 1 adhesive does not move appreciably.

as you say, it’s probably worth some trials.

There’s a YouTube video of it being used to seal slashes made by a Stanley knife in a plastic cup, which is very impressive!

you can still use brass c/s screws just c/sink a small amount then clean off the slotted part and it will become invisible.

We should all have a cartridge of this product to hand. Todays job was A vehicle rad had a small spout snapped off, tapped the hole 1/4″40 and threaded a bit of 1/4″ copper pipe. Coated the thread and hole, screwed in and then built up a fillet round it to give mechanical strength. gone off, it is sound and no leak.

Yes it is flexible as opposed to solid like resin, but for a may be 2mm thick joint and of several Sq” of area it will move little if at all. It is NOT soft like silicone. Good Luck. Noel.
