I have done a bit MIG in my time, but never made such a silly mistake as today.  I just could not get a decent weld, changed the head of the torch, checked feed through, feed rates, gas etc.

Doh!  Stupid me,  I was holding the joint together with a strong magnet (Sea searcher recovery magnet) which was sucking the filler and hence arc all over the place!

      Lesson learnt.

I think that the magnet would have a direct effect by deflecting the arc itself as a conductor, not just via the filler wire.

Correct. I used to work in a large electrolysis plant (3-400KA@48V DC if I remember correctly), the only way to weld was to use high frequency. And this was in the 90’s so I can imagine electronic inverters wasn’t exactly cheap.

That place was pretty wild, if you walked past the cells anything magnetic would dance around in your pockets like gerbils. Mechanical clocks would seize immediately and no amount of shielding would prevent CRT monitors from looking like a mushroom trip. And it would clean the magnetic strip of all your cards. That was always fun.

Yes ! Thats why it’s no good using those  magnetic squares to hold an assembly together ! Noel.

Hi, I cant say I’ve ever had such a problem, but I’ve only used them for tacking up.

              Regards Nick.
