Looking to find a good home for a couple of vintage motor cycle books I tried to create an ad but fell at the last fence: at the end of the process there is a reminder to press publish “on the next page” but, so far as I could see, no link to it or way to get there.

      Can anyone enlighten me, please?

PS When is the spelling mistake in the topic title going to be corrected? (it’s for its)

It’s just a guess … but I would assume you need to click that yellow ‘Preview’ button to make the leap to the relevant page.

Hi ega. both it’s and its are correct spellings, where it’s is short for it is, and its is a sense of belonging too, e.g. when talking about a dog , you can say it’s wagging its tail. A spell checker can’t point out grammar mistakes, so if you used it’s both times. it would be incorrect, because you would be saying, it is wagging it is tail.

          Regards Nick.

Thank you – I’ll give that a try.

I admit I found the whole process hard work and at that stage was struggling with the horrid CAPTCHA!

Before I make a third (!) attempt to list these books, does anyone know whether the process insists on publicising one’s email?

Last time round having got to a successful preview and looking to avoid using my email address I pressed the PM button and, predictably, lost all my work.

The character limitation is very annoying; surely some warning could be given during editing so that one is not “ambushed” at the review stage.

I did belatedly read the help section and see that it does indicate that a review is required For some reason, however, it seems to imply that the facility is intended solely for bikes – perhaps the wording has been cut and pasted from a motor bike website.

If composing a long text, I do it in Word or Notepad. Then copy and paste it into the forum. If the forum spits it out you then haven’t lost it

I advertise several things but dont seem to have these probs and yes you hit the preview button this allows you to check your ad as seen by others and no you do not have to show your email add.

I stand corrected, Bernard … but it makes a nonsense of the instructions.

Good point – thank you. And I could then use the character count in my WP (LibreOffice), but it seems to complicate what should be straightforward.

Somewhere in the posts I trawled through before attempting to advertise I recall there being a statement to the effect that the requirement for an email address had been removed; in default of this, a workaround would perhaps be a “throwaway” address.

                          I’ll sleep on it.

I seem to remember asking for the email not to be DISPLAYED, they probably just left the fill in as was.

I will say that apart from the odd spam ad the new system has not caused any problems unlike the old one where we regularly had problems with people not getting contact details. So it would seem to work for all those that have used it over the last year or so.

If you have a big long listing then you can put a file into the advert and just say “see list” in the description or something like that.

Just use Notepad and create your text first & save it – it also gives you a character count which is useful as there’s a 250 char limit in an ad. Also WP’s may insert odd, invisible control characters that might cause a problem. In addition it allows you to re-think your wording as you go along.

I’ve used this method sevreal times over the last 12 months and never had an issue with any functioning of the classified system.

You don’t say whether you were able to avoid your email address being made public?

You only need to look at some of the other classifieds to see that emails are not displayed. the only way to contact someone is to click their name and then message them via their profile. As I said I had asked for it not to be shown during testing of the new software.

Thank you. Trusting to your advice, I have now put my ad up successfully.

The character count feature is still problematic in my view and the email and PM drop-down boxes traps for the uninitiated. As with most things, however, once you know the drill it’s workable.

Incidentally, for Windows 10 users Notepad seems not to have a native character count and rather than get involved with other similarly-named programs I chose to draft my text in my WP and save it as a plain text file before cutting and pasting into the website.

Vintage motor cycle enthusiasts please read the ad!
