The attached photo shows my incredible shrinking garden hose which when left to its own devices has the amazing ability to reshape itself into a space of minimum volume. Can anyone explain the mechanics behind this phenomenon and perhaps cite other examples of where this effect is exploited in both the natural world and in the field of engineering?

It’s actually quite simple, a flexible rubber (silicone?) tube in a sleeve. When pressurized the tube expands until constrained by the outer sleeve. Your personal hose works in a similar manner I believe.

It’s a cylindrical bellows (elastic corrugated tube) inside a woven cover. The cover prevents expansion in diameter but not length. Water pressue causes the inner tube to extend like the bellows in a pressure guage / switch etc.

I’ve had one apart (inadvertantly, the end fell off) and it is indeed a silicone-looking tube, but not (on my one) corrugated.

The tube perishes near the ends – got one awaiting repair for the Men’s Shed. More of a gimmick than an advantage unless you live in a dolls house.

Slight digression, Poisson’s ratio for arteries and viens is ~0.5, which means that they stay the same length when pressurised. Neat or what?

A broken one is worth salvaging.

The rubber hose is very similar to surgical tubing and is very good for awkward-shaped things that you are gluing up, where clamps are difficult to apply.

The sheath is quite tough and can be used to protect extension cables, maybe as a sleeve on a tow rope or on a TIG welding torch.

I got one soon after they came on the market some years ago. They are very fragile, you cannot get away with much dragging about without multiple small punctures.

My wife was using a cheapie version to water an old ladie’sgarden, when it virtually exploded. The rip was quite long, so scrap.

The lady insisted on replacing it by a big brand name one. After a couple of seasons, that now has a pinhole.

We have stuck with our now old, hard to wind u, conventional hose!

I had one of those for a while, until my dogs took exception to it, maybe thinking it was a maggot, since it coiled and uncoiled every time they went near it.

They agreed that the only way to deal with it was to attack both ends at the same time, which they did.

Pity, since I never really got the chance to use it !
